CO. est in the Put TRANSCRIPT, . WEDNESDAY....-NOV. 30, 1898, AT THE THEATER. Splendid Performance of Fink Domines—Two Orphans Tonight, The decidedly Frenchy but ever popular society comedy of “Pink Dominoes” was given a spirited and altogether clever production at ‘the theater last night. It was a sparkling, up-to-date performance, and many who were present consider that it is one of the strongest cards in the versatile Shaw Company’s repertoire. Mr.Shawhim-. A flower booth was conducted by self was inimitable as Joskin Tubbs, a. little Jessie Cook, Vesta Walling, and frisky old boy with a penchant for the opposite sex, He had splendid support inevery respect, and the performance was a most refreshing change from the lurid and time-worn melodrama that is too often served up to a long-suffering public. There were some excellent song and dance specialties introduced between the acts last night and Director Christy and his orchestra won fresh laurels. Tonight the beautiful romantic play of “The Two Orphans” will be the bill. It isa great drama and in the hands of this troupe will be seen at its very best. Tbe proper scenic effeets will be used sure to thoroughly enjoy it. — + oe Extortions -of Express Cumpanies. There is a strong feeling business of carrying parcels at competitive rates, instead of maintaining the cent-an-ounce charge as now, and thus bring to its knees the greedy monopoly that rebels against even paying its share of the war tax. A Wonderful Water Wheel. Silas Heath, a blacksmith at French Corral in this county, has invented a ‘water wheel that is said by mining men ‘to possess a greater per centage of effiviency than even the famous Pelton wheel which was also a Nevada county invention. We aretold that Mr. Heath has discovered an entirely new principle in the form and arrangement of the buckets so that the instant the water has exerted its maximum power on a bucket it passes entirely clear of the wheel and the succeeding buckets. Do Not Want Sloan Pardoned. As stated in yesterday’s TRANSCRIPT, the effort to get up a petition for the Governor to commute the sentence of Wm. Sloan who mardered Andy Dunleavy in cold blood at: this city seven years ago, is meeting with general disapproval, Speaking of -the. petition this morning’s Herald says: It will probably receive very few sigpatures here, as the people of Nevada City have no desire to see Sloan return. Sloan, it will will be remembered, was sent from this county to serve twenty years in San Quentin prison, for manslaughter. He wantonly murdered Andrew Dunleavy, son of Police Captain Dunleavy of San Francisco, in this city about seven years ago. Dunleavy was ejecting Sloan from Wm. Britland’s saloon, at the request: of the proprietor, which the latter died in a few hours. «oe Red Cross Election Tomorrow.
