Minor Notes and Comments of Local. Interest. Albert Allan’s new home presents a fine appearance. The sidewalks this morning were heavily coated with frost. The infant child of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Oliver of Piety Hj} is very sick. The Nevada City cricketers will ~ probably go to Penryn Sunday to play the team at that. place. Mr. and Mrs. Cal. R. Clarke have taken rooms at the National Hotel and will spend the winter here. The Sacramento restaurant and lodging house, on Sacramento street, has been rented to Mrs. Al Nichols. . Our merchants are getting ready to have big stocks of Christmas goods, as they expect ‘a large holiday trade. After the meeting of the Américan Legion of Honor tonight an entertainment. will be given, for the members only. hire We will now have a rest on the election business for two years, and then we will see about a new Governor, State and county officers. The Nevada County Electric Power Company have again put up in front of their office in this city the large illuminated letters, “N. C. E_P, G0.” Yesterday Dr.Sawyer was called to attend a man named Maise, who while working at Schmidt’s sawmill, near the Central House, sprained his arm very badly. Prof. Michell will not give his usual soiree tomorrow evening, owing to the entertainment that is to be given for the benefit of the Congregational Church. : Next Thursday night the O’s and D’s of Laurel Parlor of Native Daughters will entertain the other members of the Parlor at the close of the regular meeting. There was a good attendance of dancers at the social hop given by the Chosen Friends at Odd Fellows banquet hall last night. It was a very enjoyable affair. Notwithstanding the San Francisco papers teem with big advertisements of great bargains in gentlemen’s_ suits, one who has seen the goods says “the Nevada City merchants sell better goods for less money than those humbug merchants at the Bay.” Electoral Vote. Million and a Half. New York, Nov. 5.—McKinley has received one and one-half million plurality on the popular vote of the United Full of Joy. New York, Nov. 4.—The Tribune this morning comments editorially upon the result of the election as follows: William McKinley has been elected by an overwhelmingly majority, and, the anxiety of all patriotic hearts gives place to a joy too prefound for expression. Itis not only a victory, but one so complete and decisive as to answer the fervent prayers of .loyal men. Bryan, Bryanism, Altgeldism, the free silver conspiracy and the deep plots of anarchists are all buried under an avalanche of ballots. There have been uted to the error. Business on the Stock Exchange opened with a rush to buy. Milwaukee’s and Louisville’s led the advance on the entire list, with advances from $2 to $6, which sent the brokers flying hatless in every direction to join in the wild hub-bub inside, while in the streets customers were coming up by the dozens. Lincotn, Neb., Nov. 4.—Bryan does not admit his defeat, but does not claim his election, saying he is waiting for the complete returns. Later telegrams gave him more encouragement than earlier bulletins. The nominee grows--more hopeful asthe day advances. He figures he will get 216 votes surely, and hopes to make up the deficiency. Will Inspire. Confidence. Cuicaao, Nov. 4.—Henry B. Paine of the Republican National Committee said: “The country is to be congratulated that the majority is so great that it will inspire confidence in business circles. Too much praise cannot in my opinion be given to those patriotic men who have broken away from their old-time affiliations to support our ticket.” Pluck Up. Courage, New York, N. Y Nov. 4.—The Times says: We have had three years of silver panic and business depression. We have given three months to Bryan. Capital has been frightened, enterprise benumbed, industry paralyzed. Now that we have utterly annihilated Bryan and 16 to 1, let everyboby pluck up courage and get to work. A season of prosperity. richer. than any in the country’s history lies before us. It should be entered upon with zeal and ous spirit of a sensible people. It isno time for crazy booms, or speculative kite flying. It is a time for hard work and business skill and judgment, and for push and enterprise in all legitimate fields. The American people are tired of hard times. They want good times. No. 2 contains, besides other short articles, the now famous ‘‘Horrible Orime— The Demonetization of Iron 2,200 Years Ago,’’ by Alex. P. Hull. No. 8 is entitled ‘‘Free Coinage Dissected.’’ It is by ex-Congressman John De Witt Warner, one of our best posted men omthe money question. He makes good use of the 32 pages in this pamphlet. Besides laying bare the 16-to-1 question he indicates what must be the final. solution of the coinage and currency questions.
