Some of the pa;ers are commenting
adversely on the fact that a Downieville justice of the peace heard the argument of attorneys and rendered the
decision on a Sunday in the matter of
the preliminary examination of Richard
Phelan, charged with murder. These
papers think such action will invalidate the proceedings, but they are mistaken. A provision of the law permits
the rendering of decisions on Sunday
and other non-legal days, and as for
the arguments, there is no law to prevent the lawyers from talking when
and where themagistrate will listen to

other county organizations were formed
as a basis for the California Miners’
Association, which is composed of representatives of the county associations.
The membership has varied between
250 and 300 and has been largely composed of mining operators and commercial and manufacturing firms partly
or wholly dependent on the industry.
Some of these members have been
quite prominent and active in the Miners’ Association and the presence
there of. a few men not directly engaged in digging gold has caused a few
quiet criticisms of the association by
men not much interested in it. But
the fact that business. men of high

Thosé who have concluded to enter subscriptions have been readily raised
when needed: When the Caminetti
law was pending and a delegation of
workers was sent to Washington, the
powder companies subscribed $500
each, other firms gave largely, and the
Board of Trade donated $3000. Secretary Julian Sonntag estimates that San
Francisco business and mining men
have contributed $20,000 to the support of the State association.
But this supplying of the sinews of
war and active membership in the California association on the part of afew
members has been the measure of the
work of the local association.
Now it is proposed that the San
Francisco association shake itself, double its membership and become an independent initiative force itself. ‘The
yet somewhat vague idea is that it shall

Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets is a remarkable remedy, not only because it
is a certain cure for all kinds of indigestion, but because it seems to act as
thoroughly in old chronic cases of Dyspepsia as well as in mild attacks of indigestion or biliousness. A person
has Dyspepsia simply because the
