MAGUIRE AND THE MINERS.
‘The TranscripT has
charged that Judge Maguire is ot (this campaign.
sound on the mining question; that the. quctry by the anti-miners would be the greatest calamity that . McFarland has favored the railroad
records show he has repeatedly in former years made statements to the effect
that the miners have no moral right to
extract gold or other ‘metals from the
earth. The Grass Valley Union has asserted that the Transcripr’s charge is
not well-founded, but it has to this moment failed to cite one utterance of
Judge Maguire going to maintain its
position.
The Democratic candidate has at
various times in this campaign been
confronted with the question as to how
he stands on the mining question, and
he has at all times and places dodged
the issue. We refer in proof of this
statement to the printed copies of the
speech he has made throu hout the
State during the past few weeks, and
which is now scattered broadcast in
our city. A reference to the pamphlet
will. convince anybody that the only
reference he makes to his sentiments
on this vital issue is on page eighteen
‘where in discussing the Democratic
State platform he says:
it makes careful provision for the
mining industry.
Such evasion does not suit the miners of California. They will vote next
Tuesday for Henry T. Gauge who was
once a miner himself and is now a
mine-owner.
Tur reading public that is not running for office or expécting personal
advantage of some kind from the result will heave a sigh of relief when
this campaign is over. It has been
wearing to everybody. It has been
characterized by unusual acrimonies.
It has caused a nervous fear to spread
among those orderly people who realize the injury that would resalt from
the triumph of radical and revolutionary elements. It has upset and upheaved many lines of business and distracted a large number of people who
are customarily attentive to their regular affairs. It will be a good thing
