Ohe Ward COrial. turbances of any. sort reported. ....}. ‘Tgot up the street a short distance Albert and Robert Organ went up; ‘. way.< She did» not see the defendant out he had his coat off and appeared to after a visit with Mr. and Mrs. F. G. ean a = # s Mpuch Interest Is Being Gaken in the Case. Ward, who is charged with perloining a valise from the residence of Richard Bennetts, on East Broad street, is making quite a stir dt the Courthouse. A large number of ladies have been summoned as. witnesses, and when court convened this morning the room was well filled with spectators. It appears that Ward called at several houses in this city, and when he reached W. F. Englebright’s home on East Broad street-his actions gave rise to Buspicions. The telephone was brought in to use, and Deputy Sheriff J. H. Pescoe was soon on the fellow’s trail; Inthe meantime Ward was going from house to house, and when he reached Mr. Bennetts’ pluce the sight of the valise was too much for him, and, he carried it away. When he officer Pascoe was close on ‘his heels. Ward realized that he was being pursued and. he threw the valise away and quickened his pace. The Deputy Sherquickly brought bim toa halt, recov ered the stolen article and landed the daylight burglar bebind the bars. One reason why so much interest is being manifested in the trial is that ladies in different parts of this city feel timid when left alone. Hence there is a natural tendency to have all intruders brought hefore the courts and punished for their acts. By carrying eut.this plan it will deter others from resorting to such pilfering methods. The case was called promptly at ten clock this morning, District Attorney E. B. Power appearing on the part of the prosecution and L. P. Larue Esq. for the defendant. John W. O'Neill was sworn as stenographer. The following named jurors were accepted and sworn to try the case: James Watt, Wm. Bree, Alfred Kinsman, H. J. Faohs, H. C. Me:l, George Mulroy. The regular panel having been exhausted, Judge Nilon ordered that a special venire of fifteen be sammoned to appear at one o’clock. Out of the new venire six additional jurors were obtained, namely, M. L. Roberts, BR. Guenther, J. Reagan, J.G. Neagle, Jas. Bovey, John Dunnicliff. The following have been summoned as witnesses in the case: Dr. David L. « The case of the people vs. John A.): Yot for the Miners. Yow In the Rivers. The valley people do not stand together for things that benefit the valley like the miners do for those things that benefit the miners, whether in immediate interest or not.” The Sick List. Miss Dorcas Lawrence is slightly indisposed, Mrs. W. G. Richards Is suffering from & severe cold. Mrs. Baltz is confined to her home on Boulder street by illness. Mrs. Fred Searls, who ‘has quite sick, is much improved. Mrs. John Murley of Piety Hill, who’ has been suffering from an attack of pneumonia, is now able to be up. J. Bennette, Mesdamies W. F. Englebright, L. Hyman, H. Shearer, A. Allen and Deputy . Sheriff Pascoe, 3 ‘It is said that Ward will endeavor to exctise his‘ actiéns on the ground that he was under the influence of liquor. “At 2 o'clock the examination of witnesses on the part of the prosecution was begun. Mrs. R. J. Bennetts was called tothe ‘stand and testified as to the satchel having been in the halltake it away. . Mrs. A. D. Allan was the next witness, She saw a man going around the corner of the-bouse, When he came be trying to conceal something. It looked like ‘a satchel. The witness identified Ward as the man. Deputy Sheriff Pasco was then examined. He saw the defendant coming out of Mr. Bennetts’ yard. The officer was then in front of Mr. Englebright’s residence and _ he ordered Ward to stop. He kept on up the street. and. threw the satchel over a fence. The officer then caught up to Ward and searched him. Six razors were found on him, andwhen he was taken to the jail another one was found sewed up in his undershirt. . -Mr. Pascoe was onthe stand when our report closed. _ Must Be Returned at Once. taken by some boys from the Chivell residence, on Aristocracy Hill, and carried away.
