FACTS ABOUT THE SEAL The Salt o* t 6 Sea—Som “thine Abont the, Wares—o the Depth is Measure i, The sen isthe resetvoir into which ran all the rivers of the world. It is the cistern which finaliy catches all the rain that fails, not only Uupou its own suriace, but. upon the roo's of our-homes. All this water is removed acain by evaporation 23 fast’ as it is supplied. It is estimated that eld aor a layer of the entire sea fourteen feet thick ds taken up into the clouds. This vapor is {r-sh, and if all the water could be removel in the Same way and none of it returned it is calculated that there would be leit a layer ai salt 250 feet thick oa the. bed of ‘this is upon the suppos't'on that three feet depth of water contains one inch oi salt, and that the average depth the ocean is three miles. At a depth of about 3500. feet the temperature is uniform, varving buta trifle beiwen ths potes and the e.jyator. The colier water is beiow. It is -reported that in many deep bays on the coast of Norway the water ofien begins to irveze at the bottom bejors it dous at the surface. ; At this depth waves are not felt, Waves do not travel—that is, the water does not move forwuril, although it seeus to do so; it stays in the same piace. ‘The musing and failing moves on. We measure waves by their height and by the distance ‘from crest to crest. In deep. water this latter distance is about filteen_times the height o: the waves. Jn shallow water tue proportion is ss, and this makes a choppy: sea. The force of the wares is in proportion to their height. It is said that the sea Strikes on sell rock with the force of Seventeen tons to each square yard, The pressure of the water ceases as we godown. At'the depth of a wiie this pres-are is reckoned at more than a ton to the square inch—that is, more than 133 times the pressure of tue atmos phere. ‘. , To get-correct sounding in. deep. water is disictlt, A shot weighing thirty pounds carries down the line. Throagh this simker a héle is bored, ani throuzh the hole is passed a rod of iron whicn moves easily back and forth. In the end oi the bar a cup is dug out, and the inside 16 coated with Jard, ‘ihe lar is mace fast to tue line and a si.nz hulls the shot.on. Whenthbar, which exten’s below the shot, toaches the Lottem, the sl nz unbooks and the shot slides of. ‘ine cup in the-end of the bar nolds sume of the sand, or wh tever may be on tue Lottoin, and a cover shuts over the cup t» keep the water from washing t ie sand out. lu this way we learn the charaucter oi ths deep sea bottom. It will be seen at once that we can know the depressions of the bottom oi the ocean more easily and more accuratvly than we can Jearn the elevation of the land. As a conseguen-e we have a veiter topographical map of much of tuat sur.ace than we have of tue contiRents, ‘ihe depths of the sea presents some interesting considerations. If the Atlantic were lowered v564 feet it would ve reduced to half its present width. If it were lowered a little more than three miles there would. be dry Jand ali tue way between Newfoundland ami Ireland. If the Med.terranean were lower 660 jeet, Afriea would be joined to italy and three separate seas would remain. BTAINED, and all business in the U. 8 Patent Office attended to for MODERATE FEES.
