Choosinga Profession
HE choice of a profession is one of the most difficult
and important problems confronting the young man.
If he errs he suffers throughout his life. Happy the
man who has a distinct liking and aptitude for a particular calling. For him the problem is solved by nature.
He cannot go wrong if he follows. his own inclination and
does not permit his relatives or foolish friends to coerce him
into some other field of labor. There are parents who make
up their minds when a son is born to them that he shall be
a lawyer, a doctor or a clergyman,.and who try to force: him
into the profession of their choice in spite of his own repugnance. This is not so often the case in this country as it is
in Europe, where only certain professions are held to be suitable for gentlemen.
When a boy shows a disposition toward some_ useful
kind of work, parents ought to give him all encouragement.
If he has musical talent in a considerable degree they should
give him a musical education. If his genius is for mechanical tasks, do not waste time and money to make him a lawyer ora doctor, but have him apprenticed at some foundry
or machine shop. Itis asin and asad mistake to spoil a
good carpenter in order to make a poor lawyer.
Thelearned professions are crowded with men who have
“no taste or talent for their work and who are dismal failures.
Would any man in his right senses elect to lead a life of
shabby gentility in a profession when he might be successful
and prosperous at a handicraft? The day will come when a
competent plumber will rank socially, as he already ranks
financially, above an incompetent lawyer or doctor. The
common reverence for members of the learned professions, as
such, and without regard to their individual competence, is
an absurd inheritance of old social ideas and is fast vanishing
The day has come when a machinist does not stand before.a
lawyer, a doctor or an army officer. Let us always respect
ability in any trade or profession, but let us wash out of our
minds the idea that one honest occupation is more honorable
or respectable than any other occupation. ;
Circumstances often determine what profession a man
shall follow through life, but however a man enter a profession, let him stick to it, if it is to his liking, and let him resolve that he shall be an expert. Mediocrity should never
content aman. He should strive to be the_best in his line,
whether that line be the law or street-sweeping. The best
man in any occupation prospers and is respected.

$an Francisco, Nov. 5--The total returns gs far as
received, including the city vote, ‘give Pardee six hundred
plurality, which will probably be increased several thousand
when completed. Returns from Alameda and Los Angeles
counties each give Pardee 5500 plurality.
The entire Republican State ticket: is elected.
The Legislature will be Republican by a large major—
ity.
Five Republican and three Democratic Congressman
have been elected,
Kahn will probably. contest Livernash’s election.
Chairman Spear of the Republican committee says: ‘‘We
feel confident that Pardee’s plurality will be between three
and four thousand.
Cutter has been defeated in the: Sixth Senatorial District
by nearly five hundred.
Lou H, Brown, ex-Secretary of State and Republican
candidate for member of the Board.of Equalization.from the
First District is defeated by Altred, the Democratic nominee,
by 126 votes, In the Second District, Andrew (Rep.) defeats
Braunhart (Dem.) by 4476 votes.
SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 5.—Complete returns from all
the precincts in this city give the following vote for Governor:
Franklin K. Lane, 33,692; Geo. C, Pardee, 24,141.
The vote for Governor is close and ‘exciting, both Lane. G
Demoand Pardee claiming the office by small majorities.
crats claim that Lane has been elected by 1500. .
In the Congressional contest of the Fourth District
Livernash received 16,214 votes and Kahn 15,999,
It is conceded that Bell, Livernash and Winn, Democratic nominees for Congress, are elected.
With one-fourth of the vote counted for Congressman
‘from the First District, the vote stands as follows:
Gillett, 4736; Ford, 3957.
It is estimated that Gillett’s total majority over Ford
will be 1000 votes.
San Francisco, November 5—Seven hundred and
ninety three precincts out of twefty-two hundred and twentyseven, outside of the city, give Pardee 35,562; Lane 32,634.
Practically complete returns from Sacramento county give
Pardee 4229; Lane 4673 Shea AS
