‘PUBLISHED AT
Nevada City, Nevada County,
CALIFORNIA.

"WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 1885.
BARRIOS, THE DICTATOR.
The most condicting informa“tion is: published regarcing the
character of this suddenly famous
agitator, and even his fate is involved in doubt. By a sudden
pronunciamento he declared the
Central American States united,
and himself their ruler. At fist
the outcriés weré all savagely
against him, and there sesms warrant for it in his high-handed proceedings. Union isa good thing
_ usually, and-a union of the small
States that make up the little family ly'ng betwcen Mexico and
New Grenada, if achieved wita
their concurrence, would raise
these feeble’ communities in~ the
scale of national importance. But
the other Republics which were
——_-yirtaally annexed to Gua* mala
by Barrios’ proclamation, did not .
relish this sudden absorption, and
all ot them, with the exception of
Costa Rica, not yet heard from,
flew to arms, Barrios responded
by pushing a superior — force
against San Salvador, oaly to
meet defeat, and the latest news
says, his death.
But Barrios has friends, at least
‘admirers, who now.-make themselves heard, asserting his pattiotism and bis statesmanship ; that
heisatrue father to his people,
and entirely free from the wscrupulous ambition with which
he has been credited. Rev. J. B.
Hill, well known in this city, lectured in San Francisco Sunday
evening on this subject and testified:that Barrios’ whole public life
had been a weary struggle for the
advancemeut of Guatemala and
her sister States. All the best elements of the Central American
population _favored unification.
Upon the 15th of la-t September a
cor’erence was held in Guatemala
between Barrios, the Presidents of
San Salvador and Honduras, and
‘an envoy from Nicaragua, at
~ which it was decided that the declaration of union should be issued
by Barrios,+» whom, as the mcst
prominent figure in Central America, the leadership of the movement should be given. The other
Presidents were to follow with
similar, declarations. There was
nothought oi forcing the union.
The invasion of Salvador by Barrios was the result of personal
feeling on his part aga’1st Zalvidar, the President, for his gross
breach of faith and betrayal of the
Guatemalan leader, who he falsely asser:ed. intended to become
the first President of the uni‘ d
republic.
and emphatically stated that he
would under no consideration ac‘cept such a position. jHe had
“made this declaration to the
speaker personally. « All he desired was the union. When that
should be accomplished he intonded retiring from public life of
which he was wearied. The pres“ent miscarriage of his plans would
e_probably hasien his retirement.
The speaker scouted the report of}
-his having been killed. =
This seems to be authentic,” out
it would have been well toéxpla‘n
how the presidents ofthe various
republics could barter awa, the
independence’ éf their countries or
substitute their proclamation for a
commion convention, representing
tie republics, and agreeing upona
“ basis of union, or a constitution.
Bar.’ovwife has just bought a
$500,000 house in New York, “and
Barrios has $10,000,000 in the
junds of England and France. He
bas certainly found patriotism
proitable. :

A Remarkable Family.
Those who failed to att nd the
concert a few even‘ngs s‘nce, given on bebalf of the Congregational Church, missed a rare musical
treat. The grand feature of the
entertainment . was the Godair
=. family—a fam‘ly composed of
father, mother, four daughters and
two sons, ranging irom: thre2 to
forty years of age. Each member
can play on some k'nd of an imstrument and all of them can sing,
some creditably and others beautifully. Their appearance on the
stage is unique and very attractive. The dancing of little Bertha
and Hattie was truly graceful and
elegant. The dcting of the little
ones dzew from the immense audience frequent outbursis of applause, Isaac Sanks, Jr., who assuméd .the role of comedian in
the periormance, won for himself
the-approval-of-all-present. The
Godair family should receive the
highest patronage of the people,
wherever they may go, not only
for their remarkable talents but
for their moral standing.
