NEVADA CITY PARENTS
SHOULD HAVE A CARE
T quite frequently occurs that teachers in the primary
. grades of the public schools of this city have occasion
to complain of the evident want of care on the part of
parents and other grown persons in keeping the minds of
children free from tainted or impious thoughts. It is not to
be presumed that there is more occasion for this complaint in
Nevada City than in other cities, for the mischief is generally
everywhere, and chiefly for the reason that grown persons
are not fully aware of the harm that dark thoughts do in
little minds.
There is not much that a child can do to its body that
will hurt it, but the mind is as easily poisoned as fresh butter
is susceptible to taint from close association with that which
is impure, and, like fresh butter, the taint that is in the
mind is hard to be gotten out. To be sure children will
learn bad things from other children, but not nearly so
quickly as from someone who is grown up, The adult
friends of children should be of the most exemplary character, and whoso would plant dark thoughts in a childish mind
would desecrate the holy of holies if he should every obtain
access to the temple of God.
Of all bad practices there is none worse than that of
“deviling” children, and a child that is ever upon the street
or loafing about a shop, store or livery barn is sure to be
“deviled” to the point of destruction. Such children are hec ored, made fun of, badgered and teased until they are spoiled
eal redemption.
Dark thoughts become black thoughts when they are
grown to. maturity, and black thoughts make black lives.
Black lives may as well as not spring from the careless sowing of tares in the minds of children by grown persons who
wish them well and.should know better, and doubtless would
if they were to stop tothink of the possible consequences of
their own carelessness of =< ase and action. Have a care
there.

Final account settled, allowed and approved. Distribution granted in accordance with petition.Word was received ifrom North
Bloomfield this morning that the body
of one of the two miners who was
caught in the big cave at the Union
Blue Gravel Mine was recovered from
the debris in the No. 5 drift, where the
catastrophe occurred. The body
proved to be that of Ferabosco, the
Italian miner, but contrary to expecttaion it was not crushed or mangled,
which shows that death resulted from
suffocation,
At 10:80 ofclock the rescuers were rewarded by digging a hole through and
into the narrow space where Evans
was confined. As soon as possible
a hole big enough to admit ea man was
made and Evans was quickly released
from his perilous position and taken
out of the mine. He was overjoyed to
see his deliverers and although hysterical to some degree from his terrible
experience he soon recovered bis composure. Notwithstanding his terrible
experieace his mental condition was
not unbalanced, ~but was very weak
from want of food and drink. Witha
few deys recuperation Evans will be
wellas ever. All that saved Evans
from smothering was hig presence of
mind in cutting a large hole in the airpipe as soon as he found himself en_ tombed,
It has been ascertained that the
train of mining cars which were standing in the drift when the cave occurred were instrumental in a way
of saving the lives of the other thirteen miners who escaped death by only
a bair’s breath. The impact of the falling earth against the cars sent them
going-out of the drift at terrific speed
for some distance, and hearing the
cars coming the men proceeded in
haste to get out of the way and ran for
a plece of safety. The place where the
men were working was almost instantly
filled up by caving gravel and‘ quickeand as the miners made their quick
retreat.
Farabosco had not followed mining
for any great length of time, and as
stated heretofore was to have quit bis
job last Saturday night es, he intended
to get married thie week. He was a
woodchopper by occupation, He was
a native of Italy, eged about 85 years
and a member of the Foresters, Underteker Henry Lane left for North
Bloomfield this afternoon to bring the
