McLEAN, See. 7 Id on the Sth day t (No. 14) of Twos Mrs. Isaac Sanks, the aged colored woman who was known to nearly every one in Grass Valley, and whose death occurred a couple of days ago, was buried at tbat place this afternoon. Deceased came to Grass Valley in 1850, at which time she was @ slave. She worked out for $50 a month, and saved enough money to buy her freedom. In the meantime her husband, who was still a slave, came to Grass Valley, and by his labor earned money to pay for . his freedom. Both are now numbered with the dead. When we think of the base injustice impsoed upon the colored people in those early. days we
also think what a great blessing was conferred upon théir race when Abraham Lincoln issued his famous emancipation proclamation. Plants That Eat Insects. } Francis Darwin, a son of the great Naturalist, has been investigating the effect on insectivorous plants of supplying them with and withholding from them animal food. He grew ten of these carnivorous plants under similar conditions. One plant of the lot he fed with . roast meat, one-fiftieth of a grain being . acnd tha pti others all such food was carefully ex: . cluded.
