November 8, 1902 eee ectlons Satisiactory “HE country is to be congratulated on the hearty en-— dorsement given President Roosevelt and the Republican party. Local conditions made the contests *uncomfortably close in a few States, but generally speaking the Republican success was as pronounced as could be expected i in an off year. All the great Middle Slates are still.in the Republican column. Not one will be missing. New Yotk, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois , Wisconsin . and Massachusetts are still i in line for prosperity and protection. The Republicans even retain their grip on Maryland and West Virginia, but suffer a reverse m Delaware because a selfish and unprincipled millionaire insists upon wrecking the Republican party in that State unless it consents to make him Senator. “Gov. Odell was handicapped i in New York by the feeling engendered in the large cities by the great coal strike, which entailed an immense amount of suffering among the poor. ’ The party in power is always held responsible for such conditions, hOwever blameless it may be, and Governor Odell . was severely punished for the sins of the coal combine. Had not President Roosevelt, by an opportune display of nerve and tactful-reserve, stepped aud ended the strike, New York would probably lave gone Democratic. In the States west of the Missouri river the Republican party has held its own at all points, and made gaius notably in; Montana and Idaho. f All is well, therefore, on the Republican watch tower, =_—<—___ 4448444444486 A National Sin. HE Portland “Oregonian” comments with sadness upon ‘the “national sin,” which it holds is “a spirit of indifference to the sanctity of law.” That is true. It is“fostered in childhood; it becomes irritatingly threatening in youth; it is defiance in manhood. The reasons for it are found in more than one thing, but to the sensational and brazen literature of the day, much of it is chargeable These influences perhaps more than Any other have led youth to believe that the law is at enmity with them, and that it is heroism to defy and evade it. Probably not one of these self-sufficient journals would put it.in that. form, but the expression used is the truth nevertheless. The lawless tendency, as the Oregonian well remarks, is dangerous. It is more than that, it is perilouss it is next door to the rebellions. If we continue the license to the sensational press it now has, to kindle in youth the idea that defiance of the law and its servants is heroic and manly, we will assuredly reap the harvest of bitterness presently. Such teaching of youth is common, open and unconcealed.in the vicious press of the day. We may cast on water as. we will, but the flames of despite of the law will grow fiercer daily as long as the influence promoting the thought _ of defiance pours oil upon the fire. How has the party of Jefferson departed from the doctrines of that founder of the _Democracy, -whe~taught that} , centralization in the Federal Government is dangerous. .Recently the Democracy of New York, under the guidance and direction of Mr. Hill, declared in its loudest authoritative voice that the President of the United States should claim the power to and actually invade a State with Federal. arms, Seize private property and operate it as an industry in-competition with private industries, employ vast numbers of workers and engage in producing as a business. How would the old party of Jefferson, with its jealousy of the rights of} }f the Sovereign States, its anger at the mere suggestion of invasion of individual right, and furious over every attempt to enlarge and-extend Federal power beyond the plain Datta) tions of the Constitution, regard such declarations ? : Shot to Death. $100 REWARD. $100 Gouruur, O.
