It limits the amount of mining ground that can be taken up and patentel under one patent to so sinall an area that the drift mining industry of this State—a very important branch of gold mining—wonuld be” greatly hampered. This has been repeatedly pointed out to Senater Stewart and the reasons given, but Ke still persists in retaining the, objectionab’ e clauses in his bill, notwithstanding the earnest protests of the miners of this State. As far as the unjust rulings of the Land Department are concerned, their evil effects on the mining industry have. been -réepeatedly pointed out in these columns. It will take the united efforts of the miners of the country to make any impression in this direction, as the departments are bound up in precedents and red-tape so tightly that it is doubtful if they can take the ‘proper view of things if so disposed. As to the present system of obtaining title to mineral lands, it is cumbersome, expensive, slow, tedious, and vexatious. The] miner has to pay twice as much for: his ground asthe agriculturist, and wait about six times as long before he can get his title. The general plans and the details are all of the Circumloction Office type and: apparently designed to prevent men getting titles rather than.to aid them. The whole whole system neéds changing. As to Government aid towards the construction of dams in the rivers to restrain mining debris, that is a topic which will take serious consideration, The hydraulic miners made a hard fight for recognition and finally obtained it, and itmay be that they will be able to accomplish something fnrther. epee?
