Thomas Cunningham said: The

Stockton: State Hospital, was beaten
almost todeath by Osritoa Hq Stowe,
a madman at the institution -Martin
owes hie life to one of the ‘other pa‘tients in the ward, who interferred,
after Martin bad been pounded into.
iusensibili’ y. und pulled Stowe off hivictim. Martin’ sscalp wxe gashed to
the bone ina half dezen places, his
right eyebrow “was bitten entirely away
and his right ear was chewed off by bis
insane ussailant: The intended murder
‘was plunned with wonderfa!l cansing.
The madman knew that Martin entered
the dormitory the last thing im the
evening to res'rain in bed one of the
patients. Stowe secured a piece of bed
ticking and when ont exereising in the
yard he gathered a pocketful of sand
and gravel, unknown to the attendant
in charge. The articles he sevrated:
about the ward and finally succeeded .
in making a rude, but. most effective,
sandbag. Armed with this murderous
weapon the insane man laid in’ wait for
the attendaut, whom he had pl .nned
to kill because the latter would not
allow him ta leave the lustitatton,
While Martin was stooping over adjasting the straps on the patient in
bed Stowe dealt him a visious: blow.
behind the ear with the sandbag The
attendant dropped to. the floor completely knocked ont, and then: hia insane assailant rained blow after blow
on the head of his prostrate victim,
with the sandbag. The madman: the:
sprang on the unsouscious attendunt
and »it him flercely about the face. He
sunk his teeth to the bone behind Martin’s eyebrow, and, holding the attendant’s head down with his bands on hia
tore out» big mouthful of flesh with
the eyebrow attached. The taste of
buman blood apparently affected the
madman asit would a wild bea t, apd
he sunk his teeth repeatedly in te
prostrate attendant'’s face and neck.
With ote bite he tore Martia’s right
ear entirely off aud then lapped = the
streaming blood with bis tongue, 8o'
one of the patients who saw the revolting spectacle said. The tearing of his
flesh brought Martin to a feeble consciousness, and after one of the other
patients had pulled Stowe from his
victim, the attendant wae able to rise
and call for help. . Other atiendants
quickly arrived and Martin was
assisted from the ‘cell. When the
attendants went back to restrain Stowe
they found him in bed and feigning sleep. He made no resistance when
the straps were placed on him. He
asked if he bad killed Martin, and
when told that the attendant would
live he ‘expressed disappointment.
Stowe is suffering from what the physic'aus: term paranoia. He imagines
that he is being persecuted and pursued by nesriy every one who ’comes
near him. He was committed from El
Dorado county in 1895, an incurable,
He believed that Martin had the power.
to release him from the institution if
he would, and it was because the
attendant refused to help him tc
escape from the asylum that he made
‘the murderous attack on him.
