Forty Wen Employed and Uimes in the Distriet Improving. Work at the Blue Gravel mine, near Derbec, is under full headway, and forty men are employed. Superintendent A. D. Gassaway intends to increase the force just as soon as more hands can be worked to advantage. The shaft is down quite a depth already, and the tunnel is being driven Machinery is arriving on the ground as fast as teams can haul it from this city, and the new enterprise has given great encouragement to the people of the North Bloomfield mining district. Before the snow flies the mine will be well along in the way of development work, ahead both night and day. and the pay-roll will be large. The scene of the new operations presents much activity, reminding the oldtime residents of the lively days when the Derbec mine was ranning in full blast. oe Personal Pointers. W. F. Married at the National Hotel. E. 8. Brindle, foreman of the Oriental mine at Alleghany,and Miss Josephine McCormick were married at the parlors of the National Hotel at 4 o’clock this afternoon. SacRaMENTO, Sept. 30—Elick Robinson, well known in the.lower portion of the city, entered a fruit store, near Third and J streets, this afternoon, and, being under the influence of liquor, sat down in a chair and fell asleep. A few minutes afterward an unknown man entered the store, drew a revolver and ehot at Robinson, the ball passing within six inches of bis head. The man who fired the shot then ran away. It is thought that the would-be maurderer mistook Robinson fora professional bouncer of a nearby saloon. Another Carthguake. Last. Tharsday night the three men seized James Oasey, & workingman, as be was boarding a train at Delta, stfuck him on the head with a coupling pin and robbed him of the Bank of Shasta county. Believing Casey dead, they threw the body down the river bank. They came to Redding, and Wilson impersonated Casey and presented the check for collection. Sheriff Behrens saw the men and suepected them. Hejshadowed them until news came of.the robbery from Oasey, who had recovered. The white men and the negro, Taylor, were captured. . Sheriff Behrens secured a confession, Shot By a Woman. Concorp, Sept. 29—A. R. Henri Deatsch, of the Paris Aero Club, who established the prize for a steerable balloon which M. Santos-Dumont,
the Brazilian aeronaut, made such a valliant effort to win, furnished the automobile and presided over the fight. Rain in the South.
