Popular Golf Stockings. .
The golf stocking has met with astonishing sucess in this country, and the
gentleman who introduced it is regarded as a public benefactor by those
young men who cannot boast of much
development of the calf. .But the rage
for golf stockings in civilized communities is not a circumstance to
what occurred in Chicago the other day
among a party of seventy full-blooded
Sioux who stopped off in that city. for
a few hours. All of Chicago’s
most boasted sights were regarded by
them with phlegmatic indifference, but
when these untutored children 6f the
forest and prairie beheld a job lot of
golf stockings they indulged in a war
dance and exhibited their joy. ip various other ways. .

Lixcotx, Oct. 8—Hon. Grove L.
Johnson spoke here tonight to one of
the largest meetings ever held in this
county and the largest ever held here,

The McKinley and Hobart Club paraded the streets, which were ablaze

eloquent speech, which was one of the
best that has been delivered here.

son is the girl of the hour. Although
only 16 years of age she last night battled with a’burglar who tried to chloroform, gag and bind her, and after a

making her escape by leaping through
an open window and dropping to the
ground, a distance of twelve feet.
Miss Emerson is a member of the
family of W. J. White, a merchant who
lives on Bray Avenue, near East Fourteenth street. Last evening Mr. and
Mrs. White went to an entertainment
and did not return until midnight,
leaving Miss Emerson alone in the
house with the baby.
Shortly after 11 o’clock a burglar
forced one of the rear windows in the
house and made his way to the girl’s
room, but the girl supposed that White
had returned, until the intruder tried
to chloroform her. After she escaped
from him, the burglar fled and has not
yet been captured.Bank Robber Dead.
SHERBURNE, Minn., Oct. 9.—A special
to the Times-Telegram has been received by President Brown of the robbed bank here, saying that one of the
robbers and murderers has been killed
after a hard fight fourteen miles east
of. Elmore, Minnesota. The dead
bank robber had a roll of the stolen
bills in his pocket. . Marshal Bancroft
was killed in the fight, which was a
fierce one. The man killed was probably J. D. Sair as he was the faster
wheelman of the two. A telegram
from Emmettsburg, Iowa, says that one
of the robbers passed through there
early this morning with a posse in hot
pursuit. The village has added $200
to the rewards offered. At Estherville,
tion is in custody, awaiting identification. Four men are now dead as the result of the robbery.

Two unknown men, riding gray
horses, coming from Little Valley to
Bruneau, Owyhee county, stopped and
had breakfast at Wychahoney. Shortly
after their departure a cattleman came
into Brunean and said that he had
found blood-stains along the'side of
the road. :
A party was made up and proceeded
to.'the scene. Following the trail, a
human body was found, face downward,
buried in the sand. There was a bullet
hole behind the left ear and a shot in
the right side of the neck. Around the
victim’s neck was a rope, showing how

take some definite action in the matter
before adjournment.
