The question might even be asked if it was not possible to invite them. to come some other day, and if it was not, which was the first and the great commandment, our duty toward God or our duty toward our neighbour? Our Lord said, “Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart ana with all thy soul and question comes up, was the reception given to these strangers in strict keeping with this first and great commandment? We cannot keep one co:nmandment by breaking another. Evidently there was a difference of opinion with regard to what shonld not and what should be done on a Sabbath day. Notwithstanding the alluremeats of of the visitors asked where the chtirches were and were taken to them or found their way to the places where two or three were gathered together in His name. If we test this reception by the words of the text, I wonder how it will stand the test? “If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; rand call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord honorable, and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure.” The prophet commenced the chapter from which this text was taken by sayiog: “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trampet and show my people their sins,” and yet he was to show the people of their transgressions of whom he writes in the next verse: know my ways, as a nation that did many keep the Sabbath day now ? principals lust his life. is Lord of the! a es oe this eb country, a country whose fertility is Curious Spectacle im this city last ds mine visiting and brass band, a namber . . “Yet théy seek me daily and delight to righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of theie Géd. People who have traveled cannot fail to see that there is a marked difference between the regard for the Sabbath in this part of the world from what there is in many others. Why are s0 many stores open in California on Sunday ? Why do so many men have to work on Sunday? Ifthe average man in England, Ireland, Scotland, Canada, Maine or Massachusetts, Gan rest one day in seven, why cannot the men of Oalifornia do the same? Is this such a poor country that men can not subist if. they rest one day in seven? Policeman Fowler was on Broad street near the County Treasurer’s office when a couple of strangers passed by. In one of them he thought he discovered a likeness to a criminal for whom a good-sized reward is offered, and as the pair tarned into a saloon he stepped to a peep-hole and looked them over as they stood at the bar. One view satisfied him that further iuvestigation \was justified, and hastenitig to a telephone near by he rang up the BSheriff’s office. Sheriff ters were soon at the corner of Broad and Pine, Inthe meantime the suspects had passed out of the saloon aud down Pine street where they paused in front of Carter & Johnston’s store to feast their eyes on the display of goods in the show windows. The Sheriff, who is familiar with the features of the man that is wanted, sauntered up to them. Although the resemblance was striking, he discovered upon a close approach that the party under surveillance differed in the color of his eyes and one or two other respects from the party for whom they were looking. The young men went on down Commercial street and the chase was abandoned. They were ascertained afterwards to be residents of Grass Valley’ who had taken a night off to view the

The cry may 68 raised, “We could not make the mines pay if they were closed down on Sunday.” Mines have paid and are paying that are not worked on Sundays. So with stores, Why! even in Chicago, which is not regarded as a great Sunday-keeping city, men can close up great concerns in which millions are invested, not only keep them closed on Sundays but also ive their employes a half boliday on Saturday afternoons through the Summer months. They do justas much business and he men work a great deal better. My friends, there is no reason why we should not be given to hospitality, there is no reason why we sbould not ave band music on Sunday if weso esire, bat there isa reason why we should not allow such matters to iuterfere with our duty toward God, or by so doing tempt others from doing that duty which is the first and great comnidenced: We all know.that there are works of mercy and necessity which have.to be doue on Sunday, but .et us take heed lest we confound the unnecessary with the necessary.
