Democratic Speaking.
Saturday evening the Democrats held
a meeting at the Theater, the same
being well attended. J. V. Snyder, as
Secretary of the Central Committee,
called the meeting to order. Samuel
Butler was chosen Chairman and upon
taking the chair made a few remarks.
General Joe Hamilton of Auburn was
introduced as the speaker of the evening, and proceeded to discuss the
political questions. From a Democratic standpoint. he made a good talk,
but to Republicans his arguments were
not very weighty. :

He was the most useful and prominent

to thefront, “securing the floor,” and

an impossibility to the Congressman

more useful he will be to this people,
therfore, in.a second term. The very
fact of his constituents returning him
will command for him a place and distinction impossible to a new and. untried man. It isa fact worthy of more
than passing notice, that Mr. J ohnson’s
meetings throughout the district have
been remarkable for their size, the importance they have assumed and the interest taken in them by the people.

ever, isabout the only free thing we
know of, excepting air. If you want
anything else you usually have to pay
for it in one way or another, or somebody else pays for it. It is unreasonable to expect something for nothing;
but every one hasa right to expect and
should receive full value for labor or
other services rendered, and also full
value for every dollar you spend. Does
jevery one get the full equivalent in
value for their money when making
purchases? No. Why not? Because
they don’t always know where to:go to
buy to the best advantage, or else are
poor judges of quality. If you want
every time, buy your groceries and provisions of Gaylord, whose goods are
always fresh and of the best quality.

clubs are all uniformed and the membership runs up into the thousands.
It is proposed to bring to Grass Valley

obstaete in the way of carrying out the
project is the question of transportation between Colfax and Grass Valley,
