Defines His Position vn the Mining Question and on the Railroad and Other Issues. y The,Pemocratic meeting held at Nevada Theater last evening was largely attended, and considerable enthusiasm prevailed, It being the occasion of a visit from Hon, A, Caminetti, our present représentative in Congress, induced people generally to join in givlng him a cordial reception. The meeting was called to order by E, Jé Rector, a member of the Democratic County Central Committee, who in a few appropriate remarks stated its object. John M, fore entering upon his duties made a very neat speech. Several Vice-Presidents’ were chosen and came upon the platform. John Mr; Caminetti, upon being presented to plause. He began his remarks by expressing his gratitude to the people of Nevada county ‘for the handsome majority given him two yearsago. He a/so stated that it was a great pleasure to meet the people of this section again and thanked them for the kind; welcome they had given him. He returned thanks to the resident member of the Republican State Central Committee for the latter’s courtesy in haViny: the Repubfigan stereopticon gxhibition on, the street close iu season for people to attend the meeting. and hear the speaking. He then proceeded to review his Congressional record and to explain in detail his position upon the mining question and what he had done to help the interests of the mining sections. He claimed that. his course. had been consistent and for the best interests of all his. constituents. He was in favor of such measures, in the solution of the mining question, as would be fair and impartial, and which while allowing the miner to work his claim would alse protect the farmer from receiving any injury in consequence, He declared himself in favor of the free coinage ol silver in the ratio of sixteen to one. He also explained his. position upon the railroad question and said he believed the railroad corporations should pay their debts to the Government or in case of failure so to do that the Government assume control of the transcontinental lines. would have a wholesome effect upon the less formidable railroad corporations. He is »pposed to the funding bill and would do all in his power to defeat it should he be reelected to Congress. ‘lhe speaker impressed the fact upon his ‘hearers that he wantedall the votes he-eould get this fall, -but frankly stated that if any voter thought-either-of the other nominees would promote the interests of this Congressional district better than he would, tv voce fer the other man. The speaker was listened to quite attentively and during the course of his speech was frequently applauded, At the close of his remarks three cheers were given him, Mr. Caminetti left by private conveyance for Colfax aftef the meeting, in order to cake the train there: ie : Before the meeting the Nevada City brass band played a number of tunes on the street and then marched to the Theater, where one or two selections were rendered. ~ us Leas + ee > at A, REWARD. The Post of Weditesday says: It seems impossible for Mr. Budd in his public addresses to be either dignified or truthful. The Post has begged him to abandon the style which he learned 4s the end man: in a minstrel show, and adopt the airs and wise appearance of a man of substance. Buthe presists in continuing his mud campaign. Last night at Union Hall he called Mr. Millard, ‘the Republican candidate. for Lieutenant-Governor, a ‘‘grasshopper from Kansas.” He did not abuse Mr. Estee and ‘‘Boss’’ Burns, as he usually does, but that was not due to forbearance, for he has done in every speech he has made elsewhere. Of course, the vulga¥ plane upon which Mr. Budd has placed his claims to become Governor of California is injuring nobedy but himself, THe average man will turn in disgust from a candidate who can find nothing to discuss but the personal peculiarities of his opponents. But when actual misrepresentation” is resorted to an injury is inflicted upon the morals of the community that calls for protest. When Mr. Budd stated last night that Estee purloined the railroad plank in the Democratic platform he knew he was dealing in fabrication. Estee’s Wigwam speech, in which he laid and the Reilly funding bill in particu lar, and from Which he has never departed, owas delivered two weeks before the Democratic State Convention met in ‘this city. How could he have ight tinaaear a plank that was not written ? On State extravagance Mr. Budd always waxes eloquent, but at the expense of the facts. ‘The'Post has heretofore declined to discuss this issue, for the reason that in doing so it is compelled to expose its own political party. The truth, however, requires that Mr, Budd's assertions reflecting upon the present adininistration should be corrected, Here are the tax levies of the State for twenty-six years, They consist of cold and relentless figures, and we shall make no attempt to explain them : Governor Haight (Dem.), 1868-71, aver-. age yearly tax levy 92.12 centa on the $100. Governors h and Pacheco (Rep.), 1872-75, es tax levy 56.35 cents on the $100. Governor Irwin (Dem.), 1866-79, average tax levy 68.5 cents on the $100. Governor Perkins (Rep-), 1880-82; average yearly tax levy 63.03 cents on the $100. ‘Governor Stoneman (Dem.); 1883-85, average yearly tax levy 51.32 cents on the This action $100. Governor Bartlett (Dam, , and Waterman (Rep. ) ), 1887-90, average yearly tax levy 70.35 cents ‘on the $100, Governor Markham (Rep. ), 1891-94, average yearly tax levy 48.72 cents on the $100. If ‘‘Governor” Budd or any other Dethocratic politician who is working this State extravagance buncombe can extract comfort from these figures he is welcome to do eo oyu Duad has go willfnlly mioropresented the present State Administration that Governor Markham will ‘take the stump and expose the weakness of the sophistries. of which Jim has been dealing out to his. audiences. ~ On the 22d of this month Budd will make his stereotyped speech at the Theatre in this city, and ‘on the next evening at the same place Governor Markham will expose the false statements made by Buckboard Jim. pletidananhin OP Wis eaamaaind LOCALS IN BRIEF. haces Summarized Mention of Minor Home Happenings Two ranchers from below here were in town yesterday with wagons loaded with young chickens, They had no trouble selling the fowls at the very reasonable prices they asked—#4 and $4.50 per dozen. Indeed, it would seem to me that as the functions of that office are quasi-judicidl, ao promises could be made in advance as to any action I would take in any. matter which should come before that Commission. In accepting my nomination, and at a public meeting subsequently held in this city, I stated what my course would be if elected, in performing my duties as such officer ; that.is to say, that I would in all matters coming before that Commission do exact justice between the ,people and the railroad company, and in all things carry inte effect the provisions of Section 22 of Article XII. of our State Constitution, according to the true intent and meaning thereof, and to the best of my ability, This js the only pledge I have made, and I do not intend to make any other,” The Republivans are making capital out of-the apparent inconsistency which shines out so prominently in the conduct of candidate LaRue.
