Wells. E. C. Scott, who has been living at Nevada City for the last six months, has removed-to the town of Yolo. Mrs. D. Furth and daughter of North San Juan pussed throygh town last night on their way home from the Bay. Superintendent Dunlap of the Alaska mine returned last night from San Francisco. Mrs, Danlap came up with him. M. L. Stephens and wife arrived here yesterday from Sierra county, and left on the evening train for Salt Lake City. Rev. Father J. W. Superintendent Clifford Graham of the Reddik was over from the county seat this afternoon, He has put ’the new incline down 28 feen this week. Word has been received from San Francisco that Herbert Mitchell, -who had one of his eyes cut by a ‘piece of rock at the W. Y. O. D. mine and went below for.treatment, will probably not lose the eye as had been feared. At 8:45 this morning Miss Lizzie, daughter of Joseph Dixon, who lived in a one-story house situated on Kate Hayes street and owned. by Charles Hooker,was awakened by the head of her bed being on fire. The bed stood against a partifion separating her room from the kitchen, and it was evident that the blaze had started in the latter apartment and eaten its way through the wall. The young lady immediately went to the rooms of her father and her brother Yates and awakened them, When they got back to her room that part of the building was a mass of flames. They were driven out by the heat and smoke, saving nothing but the girl’s clothing. The house, on which there was an insurance of $500 a chicken-house near by. The fire department responded promptly to the alarm, but could do no more than protect adjoining property. The Dixons lose about $500 and had no insurance. A Wide Open State, Hon. Harold T. Power of Placer county has returned from his jaunt with the visiting mining engineers, and has gone up to the Hidden Treasure mine. Henry Hanson, the half-breed from this county whoshot and killed a fullblooded Indian named Dave Porter at Grey Eagle, Placcr county, on the morning of the 27th of September iast, was taken to Forest Hill on Monday last by Deputy Sheriff Mitchell for for preliminary examination before Jastice Burke. District Attorney E. F. Wright represented the people, while Robt. F. Burns of Lardner & Burns appeared for the defense. Nine witnesses were examined, but no new evidence was adduced. The defendant did not testify, acting under the advice . of his attorney. Justice Burke held Hanson to answer before the Superior
