CUMMUNICATED.
On the morning of October 1st, the .
hand of the grim réaper, Death, fell
heavily in the family of Merrill P,
Peaslee of Pleasant Ridge. For twelve
years a sufferer from stomach trouble .
that gentleman succumbed to the
painful disease at 5:30 a. m. of that
day. He had started to Wheatland
“on the previous Saturday morning,
but after going several miles felt il]
and turned homewards. He did not
become violently ill until
night, but in spite ofa doctor’s attendance and assiduous nursing he grew
continuously weaker until Tuesday
morning, when he passed away peace» fully and quietly without apparent
knowledge of the approaching end.
Merrill P. Peaslee was born in the
town of Jefferson, Maine, on October
7th, 1830 and was married October .

Deafness Cannot Be Cured.
By local ‘applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deafness, and that is PY. constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lining of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube gets inflamed you have a
rumbling sound or imperfect hearing,
and when’ it is entirely closed deafness is the result, and unless the inflammation van be taken out and this
tube restored to its normal condition,
hearing will be destroyed forever ; nine

A stranger in/town created considerable excitement on East Broad street,
this morning by bis suspicious actions
at houses where he begged for assistance, and it subsequently develop
that he was a genuine thief. :
About 10:80 o’slook this morning
Mrs. W. F. Eng'ebright telephoned te
Deputy Sheriff, Pascoe that a tramp
had just called at her residence and
was making himself obnoxious at various houses also, by his conduct. The
officer lost no time in visiting that locality, bat when he arrived there the
disagreeable vagabond had gone up
the street a considerable distance.
Officer Pascoe finally caught ap within
hailing distance of him and ordered
the stranger, who bad a large satchel
ander his arm, to halt. Instead of complying with the demand he threw the
satchel over into Wm. H. Hicks’ yard
and started off on a lively run. Mr.
Pascoe gave chase and overtook him at
the corner of A. Nivens’ fence, the culprit evidently making-an effort to
reach the Manzanita diggings. ‘The
prisoner was taken to the Oounty Jail
and searched, where the officers found
six new razors besides one which ‘he
had evidently used on himself. The
valise, which was a good one;proved
to be the property of Richard Bennetts
and was abstracted from his house by
the thief, when no one was looking.
He gives his name as John H. Ward
and says he came from Ashland, Oregon and claims he purchased the razors,
at Redding. He is short of stature
basa black mustache and wae under
the influence of liquor when arrested.
A charge of burglary has been placed
against him.
A lot of razors were stolen from
Dutch Fiat recently and it is surmised
that the cix in Ward’s possession may
be some of them.
