COST AND BEAUTY TAKEN
FOR CAUSE AND EFFECT
O women were sitting opposite each other in a car
recently, as it was speeding its way from Nevada City
to Grass Valley. One had a fine, clear skin, a pleasant and rather pretty face and plump figure. She was
dressed in a summer costume of light but not-costly goods,
which ‘fitted her admirably, showing the contour of her figure
sufficiently but modestly, and she had that neat, trim appearance which goes so well on the street in a windy city.
The other woman was also pretty, but she had attempted to
improve on nature by just touching her cheeks with the
brush and her eyelashes with the pencil. She wore a quan-—
tity of fluffy stuff about her neck and a cloak or coat that
bore all the signs of having cost a great deal. It was made
of silk and had a white lining and was covered with a filigree
of fancy stitching and embroidery. Obviously so much hand
work was not done for nothing. Yet the costume, as a whole,
was not becoming to the woman. Somehow she lacked the
smartness and trimness of the woman opposite. _
To a man’s untutored eye the more simply dressed
woman was by far the most attractive picture. But not so
to the trained taste of the other women inthe car. All of
them stared at the ornate cloak and whispered to one another
about it.
“What a lovely coat!” said one woman to her husband.
“I don’t think it pretty;” he replied, cautiously.
“But see all the work on it.”
“Well if it isn’t pretty and doesn’t become her what does
it matter if it took a thousand seamstresses a dozen years to
make it? I prefer the clothes of the girl across the way.”
“Ob, men don’t understand these things.”
. Soconstant is the ratio between cost and beauty in
clothes, and especially in women’s clothes, that it is not unreasonable to suspect the existence of the relation of cause
and effect between them. We are so used to this ratio that
most of us take it for granted as something inevitable. Yet
the. connection between cost and beauty is not necessary. The
rose which grows exuberantly out of doors in this climate
with little culture, is‘more beautiful than the orchid, which is
a hot-honse product ot high price. Nature gives us beauty
cheaply; why cannot shopkeepers?
Silk costs much more than good linen but does it make
more beautiful raiment? Many a girl who is charming in a
simple linen waist detracts from her charm by putting on a
silk dress; yet the majority of persons would not remark her
in linen, but would assert that she “looked lovely” in silk.
Why is it that the clothes which are pronounced the most
beautiful nearly always are those which cost the most? ‘The
prettiest dresses for women are held to be those which have
the most “work” on them; that is, which are dearest.
Nor is it in dress alone that cost is taken to be the cause
of beauty and worth. In jewelry, for example, the diamond
is considered the most beautiful stone because it is the most
precious, So far as beauty goes—and jewels are supposed to
be worh as ornaments, not as advertisements of one’s wealth
—an imitation diamond is quite as good as a real one to the
inexpert eye. Whole bodices of diamonds, such as some
wealthy women in large cities deck themselves with, are barbarous and vulgar displays, if rightly judged, but the woman
that sports a blazing corselet of diamonds will be declared
handsomely dressed by nine persons out of ten. Many people, whose natural tastes would get more enjoyment ont of
beer or viu ordinaire, drink champagne because it is costly.
The taste for costly clothes and other articles is a perverted and unnatural taste. It is vulgar. It is a form of
money-worship. It isa disease which is rapidly becoming
epidemic. Itis harmful for it keeps families poor. It is
also degrading. In our democraey the woman of small means
strives to dress as well as the millionaire’s wife in order to
prove that she is “just as good.” Her notion of being “just
as good” is to be just as richly attired. This is the height
of snobbishness. It is no shame not to be rich, and a poor
woman may be just as true a lady as a rich woman; but not
if she will not dress within her means. The first quality of
gentility is truthfulness; and the woman that spends on
attire more than she can afford tells a lie to the world whenever she goes out in her fine clothes,
Died of Grief. :
“Improvemements are ander contemplation at the Zeibright mine, Bear
Valley, which, when completed, will
permit of the claim being worked to
the best possible advantage and which
will undoubtedly resalt in placing the
mine on a dividend-paying basis, The
ledge at the Zeibright is an immense
one and ore can be taken out in unlimited quantities at very little cost.
The company has been handicapped,
however, from lack of milling facilities, but thie has been remedied by the
purchase of the La Suerte mill, which
is now being hauled to the mine, It is
the intention of the company to also
put in a compressor and other needed
machinery. To defray the expense of
the improvements the ‘directors at a
meeting recently held decided to place
on.sale 10,000 shares at “$1 per share,
of the capital stock of the corporation.
It is believed that the greater part of
the stock will be subscribed locally by
men who are familiar with the encouraging prospecte at the mine.
Manager W. H. Bray, of the Huron
group of mines, while in San Francisco last week placed orders for the
machinery that is to be installed on
the newly consolidated properties.
The work of filling the orders is being
pushed rapidly and shipments will be
made in a short t{fme. The Huron
group will be thoroughly developed
under the efficient management of Mrs
Bray, and good results are expected
from the mines, Oscar Bray, brother
of Manager Bray, will be at the Huron
in the future.
The North Bioomfleld Mining Oom.pany has a large force of men at work
refacing Bowman’s Dam. The improvement has been under way for
several weeks and will take all of a
month longer to complete. A crew of
men is also engaged in running a tunnel into the hill a distance of several
bundred feet. This tunnel is to be
used as a passageway for the water
which will eventually be ran from the
dam tothe mill. Unless protected in
this way there would be constant danger of the flames being swept away by
the winter rush of waters, which has
often happened in the past, detailing a
heavy expense and inconvenience to
the company. Operations will be begun on the mine proper as soon as the
preliminary work now under way is
completed.
Numerous pedestrians have found
out to their sorrow that many of the
wooden sidewalke about town are not
safe for people to walk over, owing to
the protruding of nails which have
been drawn up by the heat of the summer’ssun, This nuisance can be easily obviated by the free use of an axe
or hammer and would call forth blessings upon the heads of property holders from the public, instead of the unnecesetry “cussing” which grates on
the ears of the TransonieT reporter
quite frequently.
