The Ellerford Dramatic Company Begin a
Week’s Engagement i This City.
Last night at the Nevada City Theatre
the Elleford Company opened to a very
large and appreciative audience in the
stirring play of “True Devotion.” The play
must have been doubly interesting to our
theatre-goers because of the characters about
a mining camp that were ably depicted by
the several members of this talented company. Miss Jessie Morton as Nugget Nell,
the idol of the camp, is a favorite everywhere, and certainly impressed everyone

Such Will Be the Ball to Be Given
on Thanksgiving Eye.
Republic in this city are preparing to give
a ball upon Thanksgiving eve at Armory
Hall in aid of an object which should be
fully understood py the public before the
tickets, which are now. ready, are placed
on sale, »
As all are aware, this State has its Homes
for Veterans, but to these the wives may
not accompany them. Itwas to remedy
this deficiency that some time ago the De‘partment of California, Ladies of the G.
A. R., began the collection of funds for the
erection of a Home for Veterans and their
wives. To advance the cause one member
from each Circle was appointed as a Home
committee to look after and promote the
interests of the proposed institution, As
the result there are now several thousand
dollars in the treasury and the proposed
gift of a building site. The Circles are
now urged to strenuous exertions in behalf!
-of the plan that the work may be carried to
completion. The object is one that must
command universal sympathy and it is to be
expected that the number who give their
support will not be limited to those who
enjoy the ball, _
No one who gives the . matter serious
last night with her clever portrayal of. the
little lass who is loved by all, even in the
mining camp as depicted in the play. We
shall be anxious to see Miss Norton in the
various other characters she will sustain
this week, for she has the reputation of being
one ‘of the most versatile artistsin the West,
and therefore. will be. a host in herself
nightly, W. J, Elleford as Jack Davis won
the sympathies of all by his open mianner
and generous heart as-ably shown in his
character of one of those born leaders about
& mining camp. Mr. Elleford is also a most
versatile artist, as will be abundantly proved
by those who are wise enough to witness
nightly every play of the Elleford repertoire.
And as Mr, ¥lleford holds the rights to
these plays for the Pacific coast, and intends
to play them by a strong company to cheap
prices, itshould induce our theatre going
public to patronise liberally such an enterprising manager, Lorimer Johnstone. gave
a manly impersonation of one of those gentlemen you oft times meet in mining circles,
and in his scenes with Nagget Nell, he was
all that could be désired, and showed his
standing asa capable actor. Frank Cooley
as Manuel Lopez gave color to, tite play both
asa villian and in his dress of such, and
therefore not only strengthened the play
himself, but helped to throw up the other
characters in a more pleasing light. His
cynical indifference in his villiany made the
‘true. manliness of Jack Davis and Budd
Johnstone stand out still more strongly.
Miss O’Connor was a very pleasing Bella,
whilst Miss Elliott made a capital Sally
Jones. J, J. Sambrook was very natural in
his character of the old 1nan Deacon, and
James Corringan made an excellent as well

fill the narrowing ranks. Lofty monuments,
burning words and the deathless glory of
our beautiful flag will remaia as testimonials when the brave comrades have al] . your Bowels and make pour head clear as a

pitiable position-of one of the preservers of
our national life forced by the pangs of
poverty to make the choice of a. shelter
which his wife cannot share: We who
expend such a wealth of tender sentiment
upon the dead soldiers should do no less
for thesequally honfored, tho’ oftimes less
fortunate, living comrades. ‘‘Cover them

but provide a cover of more substantial and
practical quality for those who are living
and whose heart strings now vibrate to the
touch of domestic affection, even as in those
heroic days tliey were stirred and thrilled.

who gave richly to the cause; she who, in
later years, has elected to bear life’s weal

these are entitled to such consideration as
will insure to them the privilege of maintaining that place beside the husband whoso
advancing age and increasing disabilities

when the fervor and self-reliance of youth
have burned low, the heart feels more

The company is one of the strongest that
has visited Nevada City, and to bill themselves for one week is an excellent recommendation in itself. ‘But Mr. Elleford may
always be relied on to give powerful plays
interpreted by a strong company, and
therefore merits the fulf support of all lovers
of good acting. Tonight the bill will be
again changed, and the great drama ‘‘The
Operation” will be produced by the full
strength of the compeny. None should miss
seeing the great play. Every night this
week a new play will be presented. and on
‘Saturday afternoon next, there will be a
grand matinee of the moral and interesting
play “‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin.’’ A first-class
entertainment at cheap prices is the rule of
the Elleford Company.

Never Speak as We Pass By.
How often has the average person noticed
an unexpected apathy on the part of some
one who had all along been counted as a
friend; a sudden inclination to avoid your
company, to look vacantly in another direction when you approach, or even éross to
the opposite side of the street so as to avoid
being spoken to, And all this, too, without any good reason. An imaginary grievance is often the cause of this unlooked-for
coldness, and while one party thinks he has
been wronged by the other, the other is at a
loss to think what has happenéd. People
who act this way are generally one-sided,
or in plainer terms, extremely selfish. As
long as everything goes their way all is well
and good, but let something occur to ruffle
their calculations, even in the slightest: degree, and at once their diseased imaginations
array Defore their film-covered eyes those
whom they count as responsible for the
