COME OFF THEIR: PERCH.
Some Advice fo Those Having Mines For
Sale,
Today’s San Francisco News Letter
says: Promoters and their agents are
still nibbling around several of the
heavy-weight mines ofthe State. These
include the veterans of many an engagement at home and abroad, none of
which have ever yet amounted to much
more than paper talk. It is not as
easy to sella mine for a million in London now as to roll off a log. Of course,
it would be impossible to convince
many people of this fact. They like to
have millions whispered in their ear,
and are always ready to confide in one
o° the many individuals who are always buzzing around, introducing their
influential connections abroad; if they
do not happen to be one of the thousand and one peripatetic agents of the
Rothschilds. This is the best advertised house on earth, and it does not
-cost them a cent either. We have had
awenty men here within the past year,
;and every man Jack of them posed as
an agent of this wealthy firm. It has
-just about come to this, that a mining
promoter who has not the talismanic
connection labeled all over him like
the continental railroad and hotel
ticket display on some. globe-trotting
snob’s handbag, he is likely to be
branded as a yellow dog in the “perfesh.” There must be a regular army
of these people in America, and if
the disease is as bad in Australia
and South Africa, what a force this old
house could musterina pinch! It is
now said that the Royal mine is in a
fair way to be taken up, under the ad‘vice of Wm. B. Farrish, the well-known
mining engineer. The Nevada. City
mine is again open for another engagement, according to latest report, and so
is the Confidence of Tuolumne, the
Bleck Oak, and a dozen or more of the
old stand-bys,which for years past have
braved with impunity the scrutiny of
investors here and elsewhere. If in
some cases the owners were to come
down from their perches in the matter
of price, it is possible they might have
been relieved of their burdens and been
able to follow ‘the example of some
other great and good men, who now enjoy life idling about the hotel lobbies,
while the fellows who bought them out
are rustling togeta return from their
investment in the mines. Buying a
property and putting up twenty or
thirty years of an estimated annual
yield for the privilege of developing
the same if it happens to be in the
ground, is a pretty safe proposition for
the seller, if it isa rather problematical
venture for the man who parts with the
sack. Butall the fools are not dead,
for which the genial promotion shark
will probably feel inclined to remark, “let us thank the Lord.”

RESTRICTING MARRIAGES.
The One Year Limit Has Proven an Entire Failure.
Less than eight months’ trial has conclusively demonstrated, says the Marysville Democrat, that the law to restrict
marriages under certain conditions has
proven a failure. A divorced person
has the same right, after a decree of
separation has been entered, to contract marriage as those who never
were joined in wedlock.. When such
persons once decide upon a day for a
wedding and there be no valid objection on the part of parents or guardians, they should be permitted to act in
freedom to consummate the union at
home among relatives and friends.
The present law has. been the means
of sending 28 couple to Reno, about a
dozen to Oregon and several others out
on the ocean to be married, all in less
than seven months. The extra expense to these people has been not less
than $2,000; at the same time the home
minister, the hotels and county treasary have been losers, as well as the loeal livery stable owner, the railway and
the stage lines. The absurdity ot
enacting such law is aptly illustrated
in a local case. One week ago a decree
of separation was entered in the Superior Court of Yuba county, the man and
wife being residents of Browns Valley.
Wednesday evening the divorced woman and her vew partner returned
from Reno, bearing a marriage certificate of the State of Nevada, the extra
expense over a marriage at home being
about $50,-but they are “at home” now.

NEVADA CITY WANTS IT.
Next Year's Convention of the State
Miners’ Association.
It is not at all unlikely that an effort
will be made by the Nevada county
delegates to next week’s annual convention of the Miners’ Association to
have the next meeting of that body
held in this city. San Francisco has
heretofore had a monopoly of the convention, and it is understood that
many of the delegates of that city
think it would bé eminently proper
to come here next year. The Nevada
countyans have not yet definitely decided upon urging the matter, but
they will do so if they do not find a
serious and widespread objection to
prevail when they get to San FranWant .to Hy draulic.
