She resolved to make the effort, and the old baldheaded rooster and the unadorned hen were duly united in the bonds of wedlock. They were sequestraed ‘in a cozy coop and every day an egg arTived to bless thehappy union. When a dozen eggs had been laid on the a'tar of progress they, the eggs, were confided to the maternal care of a sister biddie, and in due course of events twelve little chicks opened their eyes to the ambient atmosphere, hopped out of their shells, and exclaimed-in chor. us, “Where am I at!” The expected bad happened. Nota feather was visible on them, In costume they were as classic as Venus rising from the ocean, They grew apace like other chickens but no feathers have yet appeared, and they have now reached a size and age where their impropriety of dress is a cackling scandal to the whole chicken yard. They will soon be large enough to enter into marriage contracts on their own account, and if they succeed in perpetuating the sins of their original parents the problem of the featherless chicken will have been solved and a vast amount of labor saved to the ovérworked house wives of the world. All that will be necessary for a roast, @ fry, a fricassee, a potpie or a tomale will be the swing of the hatchet and a few deft manipulations with a dressing knife. Mewpuis, Tenn., Oct. 15—Three large life insurance companies today filed a a sensational bill in the United States Court against Boone Coulter and Mrs. Maude Walker, charging covepiracy to gain the payment of three policies of $10,000 each on Rebert Walker, the woman’s hnsband, who died mysteriously, An autopsy at the time of death failed to show any criminal cause, but the companies believe they can prove foul play. Walker was a lumkerman, and his life was insured for Coulter. The woman sent a message that called Walker home, where he drank a glass of water, dying soon afterward. Turn Nihilists. Last Satarday the TRansorier published a correspondence from San Francisco in which the writer narrates a meeting with James Haworth, a pioneer resident of this county. At that time Mr. Haworth was apparently in the best of health and the news re. ceived here last evening that the old gentleman had passed away at about the noon hour at San Francisco yesterday was a severe shock to his many friends in thie city, where he has visited often as the guest of Mr, and Mra. 0. A. Pare. Death was due to th» infirmities of old age. Mr. Haworth first landed in Oalifurnia in 1849 and for a number of years in early days acted as president of the California Stage Company, which in those days had lines connecting with nearly all the principal cities and towns of the State. . For the last fifteen years he had been employed in the United States mint at the metropolis. Deceased was about 78 years of age. He leaves .one daughter, Mrs. Jamesina Welle, to mourn his loss. The funeral will take place Sunday from his late home in San Francisco. Fearful Odds Against Him, Bedridden, alone and destitute.
