terest taken in them than in the. past. .
Annually a meeting is beld in Smartsville, when a half dozen men are chosen
to attend the State Miners Association .
Of course some of}
them will attend the meetiug, but only .
_ in San Francisco,
to have a good'time and to contribute
a few. dollars to San Francisco. In
Nevada county where there are more
real miners at work than in any other
county in the State, there is very little
interest taken in the State Miners Association. In fact, if the Supervisors
had not voted $509 from the county
treasury as a contribution, the’ State
Association this year would have received very little money from Nevada
county. Lhe laboring miners do not
receive any benefit from the organization. A few men attend the meetings
annually and make the same speeches,
but they are not miners.—Marysville
Democrat,
All of which is baiderdash, as Brother
Sherwood unquestionably knows very
well. At the annual meeting of the
Nevada County Association held iv
this city on the 7th instant, the City
Hall was crowded to the doors: with
mine owners and other men directly
connected with the industry, and they
had come from all parts of the county
where mining is carried on. The Association’s board of officers as well as
its township committees are largely
made up of men directly engaged in
mining as employers or employed. Our
citizens. have seldom if ever contributed more cheerfully or liberally to
the treasury .of the Association than
they are doing this year. They are
not giving their money for the fun oi
the thing, nor are they going in large
numbers to the State convention next
week just for a lark. They realize that
if the anti-miners of. Yuba, Sutter;
Colusa and Sacramento counties, who
are being egged on by lawyers Devlin,
Phipps and other plotters of that
kidney, are not headed off in their jobbery, that all classes of mining will
eventually be crippled if not killed, .
and that such a result would mean the
practical wipiug-_off the-map-of-Nevada
county. Of course it-is-the policy df
the anti-mining conspirators and the
two or three papers standing in with
them to luil the miners into fancied
security, but the miners have had considerable experience of a costly character in the twenty-odd years that
the valley ring has been engaged in its
bushwhacking, and they are not going
to lie down on their arms now.

The Thistle Shaft,
The Plumas Independent says that .
the Thistle mine, in the success of
which, to a certain extent, the counties
of Sierra and Plumas are mutually interested, is now being pierced by a
third bore hole, which it is hoped when
down to bedrock will satisfactorily determine the level at which a tunnel
may be driven into the rich gravel of
the Thistle. The boring machine is
employed to locate the different levels
of the bedrock, and not in prospecting
for gold or gravel. -Two holes have
previously been put down. It is an article of faith with all old time miners
acquainted with the locality referred
to, that the gravel deposit so long
mined at Gibsonville, runs the entire
length of the Gibsonville ridge.

Deafness Cannot be Cured
by local applications as they cannot .
reach the diseased portion of the ear .
There is only one way to cure deaf .

inflamed condition of the mucous

this tube is inflamed you have a

and when it is entirely closed, Deafness .

SLIGKENS IN AUSTRALIA.
The Anti-Debris Cranks After the Gold
Diggers There,
ing is rapidly developing into one of
the main industries of Australasia. It
has been gaining ground in the colony
of Victoria for some time past, and
now an anti-debris clique is busily trying to stop the workin the interest
of the dearly beloved farmer, who, of
course, is dragged to the front as leading the faction, willing or unwilling.
The case of the California clique is
cited, although nothing is said of the
loss to the State of $90,000,000 during
the time when the iniquitous law
against bydraulicking diegraced the
statute books. Fortunately, the Minister of Mines in Victoria has something to say in the matter, Free from
the entanglement of the village Dogberry, he has publicly stated that he
favors the dredging system.
Fancy arlyone doing such a thing in
California. Why, when hydraulic
mining was under the ban here, some
of the staunchest friends of the industry today could not have been forced
to open their mouths in its defense at
the point of. a bayonet. It was only
when the Sta‘eMiners’ Association
was organized as the result of a battle
kept up by a few individuals and papers throughout the State, that the
shirking crew lurched to the front and
crawled into preferment as the good
and firm friends of the miner. Their
salvation politicaliy could be depended
upon with the change of popular opinion, and up they popped full of an enthasiasm begotten of rank. hypocrisy.

AN OLD-TIME DANCE,
Catholic Ladies Will Give One Next
Thanksgiving Eye.»
At a meeting beld, last evening at
the home of Mrs. Wm. Maher the ladies
of St. Canice church voted to give one
of their old-time dances at Armory
hall on the night before Thanksgiving. . ;
They will have the best music to be
obtained in the county and will serve
one of those fine suppers for which
they have so long been famous.
It has-been a long time since a benefit has been given for this church, and
a rousing.one on the coming occasion
can be counted upon: In former years
the St. Patrick parties given for the
same good .cause were the jolliest
events of the sexson, and the Thankse

those memorable gatherings.
