Marvelous Results.
From a letter written by Rev. J. Gunderman, of Dimondale, Mich., we are permitted to make this extract: ‘I have no
hesitation in recommeding Dr. King’s New
Discovery, as the results were almost
marvelous in the case of my wife. While
I was pastor oi the Baptist Church at Rives
Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe. Terrible
paroxysms of coughing would last hours
with little interruption and it seemed as if
she could not survive them. A friend recommended Dr. King’s New Discovery ; it was
quick in its work and highly satisfactory in
results.” ‘Trial bottles free at Carr Bros

ANTI©DEBRIS COMMITTEE.
Meeting of the Executive Board
Held in Sacramento.
The Executive Committee of the State
Anti-Debris Association met at Sacramento
on Tuesday and transacted routine business,
The Manager’s report showed what had been
done during the last month, and that the indications were that many miners, after a
season of enforced idleness, were getting
ready to resume when the rainy season
should commence.
An application was received from some
miners on the American river, asking that
~. the injunction served on them be raised, as
they are now mining by the sluice process.
The application was referred for further
investigation,
It was stated that efforts were to be made
at the coming session of the Legislature to
have repealed all laws. against hydraulic
mining, so that it could be revived with
“old-time glory” to fill up the river again
with debris, The opinion was expressed
that the people of tlie valley should see to
it that they do not lose by legislation what
they have gained after so much tees i in the
Courts,

NOW AMONG THE BEST.
What Some of the Early-Day Nevada City Musicians Are Doing.
San Francisco, Oct. 14th.
My Dear Transcript: This is the busiest month of the year for me. I am _ so
tired when I get home that I think I cannot write another line. , But I am spurred
on by the many compliments I receive from
those whose praise is praise indeed, And
when my old school-master commends me,
and says he has told others to read my
thoughts, I feel Iam more than compensated for the time expended,
A GROWL.
‘Once upon atime,” as the story book
says, there lived in the city of New York
a man nained Fitz-Greene Halleck. Every
schoolboy knows that he was thé author
of ‘‘Marco Bozzaris;” but every one does
not know that he was a writer of far wider
range. .He once wrote a beautiful little
ode to spring. Icost him a great deal of
. thought, and he watched for its publication
rwith anxiety. What.was his horror to see
his words changed, and the verses made
ridiculous, He sat down and wrote, in his
righteous indignation, the following:
“‘There’s a sweet little ode on the opening of spring,
Where I spoke of the dewdrops on
freshly-blown roses;
But the nasty. things made it on
freshly-blown noses ! ”
Where does the application come in?
Well, the -proof-reader must have been
asleep whon he read the proof of my last
letter. Ifever I lose my soul it will be
because, as a compositor, I have used such
profane words over vile manuscript that 1
am ashamed to think of them, Profanity
and myself have parted company. But,
for fear some other poor wretch may have
his son! put in jeopardy, in all my writing
to the press I have endeavored to maké
every letter clear and every word distinct.
There! I’ve bad my growl,
A MAPPY -LoT, co
It has been a custom of: mine to drop
into the Supreme Court building two or
three times a week, as I have a number of
friends located there. Last Saturday I
wént up to the top story, where the Supreme Court is located. It was pay day.
For some reason the Justices had not received any salary for two months, ‘and
there was joy in the camp; _ because,
strange as it may appear to the, ordinary
mind, Justices-of the Supreme Courthave
to pay their bills' like any layman would,
Straying into the Clerk's office I met Mr, .
L. H. Brown, our candidate for Secretary
of State.

frank, he was truthful.
He was
By his own
efforts he won the fight. Col. Burns did
not want him, For months he had been
working for it. He had made a thorough
canvass of the State. Alameda county led
off with 55 votes, and when the roll call
was completed it was found that he had
over 500 votes, without counting San
Francisco, All the Supreme Judges are
for him, he is a native son, he has never
gone back of his party, and he deserves
the support of every one who believes in
party fealty. ;
And now let us seek the Muses,
said that
**Music hath charms to soothe the
savage breast.’
Nevada ccunty has produced some musicians who have made notonly a State but
It is
I put several questions to him, . Tiseases spring from
@ natural affinity for lumber he went into
the barrel business. .But his musical desires led him on and he finally succeeded in
organizing the Second Regiment Band. It
is now called the Park Band and Mr. Coggin is its business manager. His lip is as
strong as ever, He still plays the B-flat.
When I think of Wallace Williams, as he
stood on his father’s porch in the ‘‘wee sma’
hours of the night,” breathing his thoughts
through his instrument, Iam reminded of
some lines of Sir Walter Scott, but with a
difference:
One blast upon his bugle hora woke
up @ thousand men !
I quote but one line. It will be understood by those who lived in Nevada City
at.the time. When'I think of. the many
sleepless nights [ have passed on account
of this musical rivalry I am glad to think
that it is athing of the past, and that in
the natural course of all humanity it has
been settled by the inevitable.
At the same time these things were occurring in Nevada City there lived in Grass
Valley a musician of more than local note.
His name was H. Schriener, As a violinist
he had no equal in that. place, Eventually
he came to this city, and his ability was
readily recognized. He led the orchestras
.of many of the principal theatres here, and
I do not believe he was ever without a position. He bought a cigar stand on California street. It was a meeting place of
some of the most prominént musicians here;
and when H. Schriener was called from the
terrestrial orchestra to the celestial one
above, no one was more sincerely mourned
than he. WALTER MEAb,
Dr. J. H. McLean's Strengthening Cordial and Blood Purifier is admirably adapted

a National reputation. In the sixties there
came to Nevada City a thin, cadaverouslooking individual. He was of German descent: and his full, long-flowing beard gave
him quite a distinguished appearance.
There was a little boy living in Nevada
City at that time who had displayed more
than ordinary ability on the violin. This
old virtuoso, whose name was Schmidtschneider, took a fancy to the boy and
taught him as he only couldteach. To him
it was as though his own son was under
his instruction. All his spare moments
were devoted to the boy; and so thorough
was the work he did that today Marcus
Blam is réségnized all over the United
States as one of its leading mnsicians, He
is leader of a band here; he writes music
for several Eastern houses, notably White,
Smith & Co., of Boston, the home of music,
and is recognized by all asa master of his
art, Buthe is the same old Marcus—no
airs, no affectation. He looks after his old
mother with as much affection and solicitude as though he was not at the head of
his profession anda man sought by many.
A great many years ago, how many I do
not care to say, there lived on Gold Flat a
common, ordinary-looking man, who was
employed in some capacity around the ‘saw
mill operated by a Mr. Wentworth. About
this time it was decided to start -a brass
band in Nevada City. All the available
talent was interested in the scheme, and
the man from Gold Flat put in his name.
He had no experience—he was green—but
he had a will power to overcome all obstacles, He elected to play the B-flat cornet. Now, there was another man in-Nevada City who hadthe same ambition, so
it was decided to have two B-flats, one to
relieve the other, as is done at the present
time in all metropolitan bands, Well, the
band organized, and my old friend, Carter,
anegre, who had been member of the
celebrated Johnson Band of Philadelphia,
was the teacher, I believe he has gone to
his etercal rest, But to resume, The
members of the band made rapid progress,
but there was a rivalry between the B-flat
**spielers.” Gold Flat listened to the notes
that were made by the breath of the lumberman, while Nevada City suffered the
infliction of midnight serenades from the

THAT CRICKET GAME.
Official Score of the Match Played
at Penryn Sunday.
Last Sunday the Nevada City: Cricket
Club played a match game of cricket at
Penryn with the Citrus Colony Cricket
Club, Our boys, although they played
very well considering the practice they have
had, were no match for the Citrus boys,
who are skilled players. The boys had a
great day’s sport, however, and never éajoyed themselver better, Our bowlers were
fully equal to those of the Citrus team, but
at batting and the general technique of the
game were sadly deficient, They, however, are not disheartened, but are determined to practice, so that the return game,
which will be played here, may be one worth
seeing. ec:
