BROWN & CALKINS.
¥, P. BROWN. _L, 8. CALRINS.
DUTY OF REPUBLICANS.
As the day of election comes nearer
and nearer the outlook fora great Republican triumph in the county and
State grows more assuring. The Republican forces are united and harmonious in evéry quarter and are bent
on making the victory a signal one.
On the other. hand the Democracy is
vexed with serious dissensions and
there have been inflicted wounds that
cannot possibly be healed. Old, tried
and true veterans of the unterrified
have been rebuffed and snubbed and
tricked until patience has ceased to be
a virtue, and ‘the victims have firmly
resolved to this year administer a rebake to those who temporarily have
the whip-hand and are driving the
Democratic chariot to the devil, that
will not soon be forgotten.
But bright as the outlook for the Re‘publican party is, certain as it is that
the Republican candidates have such
an encouraging prospect, the managers
and the rank and file of the party cannot afford to trifle with their opportunities by relaxing into inactivity and
indifference. They have an an indomi.
table as well as wary enemy to contend
with. That enemy never fights so
effectively, so persistently, as when the
odds are'against it to start with. It
devolves upon the Republicans therefore to not only vote right when the
day of election comes, but to labor
enthusiastically
from now till then to keep alive the
unremittingly and
spirit of party enthusiasm. They must
brace up the weak-kneed or wavering
in their own ranks and spare no pains
to win over converts.

H. M. La Rue, the Democratic candidate for re-election as Railroad Commissivner of this district, is laboring
under a fatal disadvantage in his canvass. He is confronted by the fact that
in 1894 he went before the people declaring railroad freight rates were too
high and that, if he were elected, they
would have to come down, and the farther fact that when the people, taking
him at his word elected him, he failed
utterly to keep faith with them. He
cannot in extenuation of his course
urge that it was out of his power to keep
his pledges. The Sacramento Bee,
