To the People of Nevada City and Vicinity:— Having fitted up a steam laundry. in the building lately occupied as a steam laundry at the north end of Pine street we are now prepared to do a limited amount of laundrying and wil] call for al]. orders, to our limit, en and after Monday, Oct. 22d. In and by our solicitation for work we wish to say that we have gone into this enterprise knowing the prejudice that exists as to so-called steam-laundry work, of which many of you are familiar with, to your injury and an injustice to the business. This we will overcome if you will give us trial’ orders and your just criticism, by which we expect to establish our merit in that line and build up a business, with a reasenable-prefit to eurselves, commendable to the city, aswell as an enjoyed convenience to the citizens. You will remember that absolutely pure soap, absolutely pure water and improved washing machinery is the key to successful laundrying and nothing more is used in the cleansing except on next to indelible stains, and then only only oni.the stained part and not the whole garment, as is frequently done to cover up defective work. Give uso trial and be convinced. Drop a postal card in the postoffice if you should be missed by our solicitor eddressed to 8. B. A “Good Suggestion from Samuel Butler, the Well-Known Writer. Eprror Transcript: The winter months -. are rapidly approaching and the young men of this city are puzzling their minds to devise some method by which they cap . while away the dreary, monotonous hours of the long winter eyenings. I ‘shall endeavor in this communication to suggest some means by which much of this monotony can be averted. : “It appears very singular indeed, that a town of the dimensions of Nevada, City, with a population approximating 6000 people, should be entirely destitute of any form of an institution that has for its object the development of the mentaPand oratorical faculties of its residents. Such a state of affairs is greatly to be deplored in an intelligent community and should be promptly remedied, Asa remedy for this evil the writer respectfully suggests the formation of a literary and debating society, where current events could be profitably discussed, ‘ Tbat Nevada City possesses the material for such an institution no one will deny. That such an institution would be productive of material good, developing the literary instincts of our people, is an incontrovertible fact: A number of smal] towns and villages in this. State pride themselves on the possession of a literary. or debating society, and in conjunction with these little organizations can generally be formed a ‘well-selected library. tion may seém to the outside world there can always be discovered a coterie of individuals intelligent enough to discuss entertainingly the great problems of the age. Apart from the fact that a pleasant evening may be spent in this manner, the benefits to be derived from the acquisition of valuable obtained, are inestimable, Some people, especially young men who have not had the advantages of a thorough education, labor under the delusion that it is necessary to become a living compendium of technical and classical knowledge before affiliating with such an organization. No more palpable error was ever conceived. Were every individual an encyclopedia of information there would be no necessity for the existence of such institutions as those now under. discussion, It is evident that we associate in this manner because of the informatiou—weacquire aswell as that which we impart. It is impossible for any individual to be a master of every branch of learning, but through a mutual ' exchange of thoughts and ideas in the particular study in which we are engaged, we can assist each other to attain this object of perfection. Thewriter can, with a feeling of pardonable pride, point to men who -have achieved fame in different-parts of the -world who received their first stimulus in the narrow éonfines of :a literary and debating class. = as ; -\-Another argument in favor of such an institution is the fact that in connection with all our leading colleges and universities are to be found lyceums and literagy and debating classes. These are maintained with the object of keeping the students thoroughly informed on ‘the problems that do not come within the range of their studies, and the knowledge thus acquired is found to be invaluable in after life. The object of this article is to arouse the interest of the literati of this city in such an important matter. I sincerely hope that we shall shortly wits ness the inauguration of a literary society which will reflect credit upon Nevada City and its ecvironments, and that interest enough has Leen arcused through this suggestion to devise some plan to perfect this object. Samvurn Butter. Nevada City; Oct. 19th. —_——___—_~--0@e,> 1. An Ample Fund of Pleasure and Health May be derived from an ocean voyage and foreign travel. But before one gets one’s ‘sea legs” on as the sailor says, the abominable qualms, begotten of sea sickness, have usualiy to be gotten over, Delicate people suffer, of course, more than the robust from this ailment, but few sea travelers escape it, Against the frightful nausea it produces, Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is a reliable defence, and is so esteemed by tourists, commercial travelers, yachtsmen and mariners. An ailment akin to sea sickness often afflicts land travelers with weak stomachs. This is often brought on by the jarring of a railway train, Disquietude in the gastric region from this cause is always remedied by the Bitters, which also prevents and cures chills and fever, rheumatism, nervous and kidneys trouble, constipation and biliousous, of}. Twenty years ago, at the age of 18 years, [had swellings? come on my legs, which broke and became running sores. Our family physician could do me no good, and it was feared. that the hones would be affected. At last, my good old ; Mother Urged Me to try Ayer’s Sarsaparilla. I took three bottles, the sores healed, and I have not been troubled since. Only the scars remain, and the memory of the past, to remind me of the good Ayer’s Sarsaparilla has done me. \I now weigh two hundred and twenty pounds, and am in the best of ‘health. I have been on the road for the past twelve years, have noticed Ayer’s Sarsaparilla advertised in all parts of the United States, and always take pleasure in telling what good it did for me.” Ayer’s Sarsaparilla Prepared py Dr. J.C, Ayer & Co., Lowell, Mass, Cures others, wilicure you VTTMYVdVSHVS has everything nearly arranged at his store on Broad street, one door above the County Treasurer's office.
