On June 6th, Miss Emma Buck and a lady friend were about to step into a boat at the rfver side, when, by some mischance they stepped into the water instead of the boat, where the water was eighteen feet deep and the current was swift. Walter Cook sprang into the water and brought Miss Buck to land, while another gentleman did as much for her lady friend. Saturday Miss Buck and Mr, Cook were married by Rev. Charles Oehler. Stein IT SHOULD BE DONE. . No Better Way to Adyertise Nevada County Was Ever Presented. Senator J. A. Filcher of Placer county, now Secretary of the State Board of Trade, R. C. Walrath, John T. Morgan, I. J. Rolfe, E. J. Rector, Nat. P: Brown, W. F. Englebright, W. D. Long, W. H. Martin, F. E. Wadsworth and W. W. Waggoner appeared before the Boardof Supervisors this afternoon and asked that an appropriation be made of $15: per month and $100 with which to purchase arlarge glass case in which to make exhibits of our mineral and other resources at the rooms of the Board of Trade, at 575 Market street, San Francisco, Several counties have taken space there and it is regarded, as it certainly is, the best way ever inaugurated for advertising a county’s resources, The rooms are open at all times, with attendants to give any and all information to intending buyers of mines and real estate who daily apply there. Several hundred people visit this place every day, and among the numiber are many in search of facts relating to the various counties of the State. People “coming to San Francisco from the East aud from foreign lands now understand, and are so directed, that they can save great expense in looking for what they desire by going to the rooms of the Board of Trade. It is certainly hoped that our Board of Supervisors will grant the request made by our citizens today. The Board took the matter under advisement. HE CAN STAND IT. _ Rent Raised From $35 Per Month to $10 Per Day. Robert Simmons is probably at present paying the highest rent ever collected from a tenant in this city for many years, or, for that matter, anywhere else in the county. He is now paying rent at the rate of $10 per day for the place occupied by his saloon on Broad street, and will have to pay that amount until he removes from the premises, which will doubtless be pretty quick. Simmons, up to a few months ago, had a lease of the property from Edwin Tilley, the owner, but his lease having expired he was requested to move out, He did not do so, however, and after a period of fluctuation in the rate of the rent the owner leased the plave to Isador Stein of a stationery store. The lessee gave Simmons thirty days in which to vacate and the arrived here a few days ago and seeing that the place was still occupied notified Simmons that his rent would be the abevenamed sum after the first of October. GIVEN 30 YEARS. Ira Abbott Will Pay the Penalty of His Crime, Today was the time fixed by J udge Caldwell forthe passing of sentence upon Ira Abbott for the killing of Charles Bennetts in July last. The original time for passing sentence was fixed for Monday, September 24th, but C. T. Jones, the leading counsel for the defense, being unable to be present on that date the time was postponed until ‘The court room was well filled with spectators when the case of The People vs, Abbott was called about 11:30 0’clock. Wher the defendant entered he immediately took a seat beside his attorneys, Messrs, ©, T. Jones of Sacramento and A. J, Ridge of Grass Valley. He was calm and collected and if he realized the position in which his act had placed him he showed no outward appearance of the same, in fact, he seemed the least concerned--of all in the court room. His attorneys at once moved fora new trial which the Judge overruled, The Judge then took up the matter of passing sentence. He reviewed the circumstances of the homicide‘and’ considered the nature of the crime justified a severe penalty While he considered the recommendation of the jury for mercy in the case he thought thatthe punishment should be of such a nature that it would toa great extent deter others from committing like crimes, He then sentenced the defendant to thirty years in the Folsom Prison, and sta’ that he would have imposed a much heavier sentence had it not been for the recommendation of the jury. The prisoner upon being asked if he desired a choice of the two prisons replied that he preferred Foleom. Under the Goodwin Act, by good conduct and behavior, he will be enabled to reduce the sentence to eighteen years and six months, 2 Police Court, Marshal Getchell last evening arrested Albert Howard for vagrancy. Howard did not disprove the charge and, Justice Carr sent him to the county jail for thirty days. J. C, Long, another vagrant arrested by Marshal Getchell yesterday, will be sentenced by Justice Carr tomerrow. John Doe, a member of the medicine company, was arrested by the Marshal last night for disturbing the peace, Justice Carr fined him the eosts of the suit, . Superior Court. It-is pleasant to the taste, easily borne on the stomach and harmless under prolonged use. Mrs, Thomas Kidd, is seriously sick at the residence of her parents on Broad street. She has been suffering for several days from inflammatien of the bowels, which has developed into peritonitis, and she is now in such a critical condition that doubts are entertained of her recovery. Drs, Hunt and Muller are attending her.

DEATH FROM EXPOSURE. WHaT THE REPUBLICANS County Have to Say About Grove L. Johnson. The Republican party of Placer county adopted this as part of their platform: ‘We congratulate the Democratic party of this Congressional District upon the magnificent failure of its representative in Congress, A, Caminetti, in the face of his boasting promises, to affect the slightest results in the last session of Congress towards the rehabilitation of the mining industry of so great and commanding importance to the people of this county; and we also congratulate our fellow Republicans that they will at the next session of Congress be enabled to use the gréat and commanding abilities of Grove L. Beckman, the Republican nominee for Railroad Commissioner: Mr. Beckman is an old Yoleite, having cast his first vote for President ii “this county in 1852. During his first few years in California he followed the occupation ofa miner in Trinity county, and after that engaged in farming in Sacramento county, ' In the year 1879 he organized the Peoples Savings Bank in Sacramento, and has been its President ‘and Manager ever since.
