FOR COUNTY CLERK.
Growing Probabilities of the Success
of Willard-P. Calkins.
(Grass Val ey Tidings.)
As reports from various parts of the
county continue to come. in, it becomes
more and more apparent that Willard P.
Calkins will receive the united support of
the Republicans ou the day of electicn.
This is as if should be. The nomination
for County Clerk was not of fiis seeking—
indeed, it came to him as a spontaneous
and free-will offering trom the authorized
representatives of the party in convention
assembled at Grass Valley. In accepting
it’he put himself under a moral obligation
to use his best efforts to achieve victory at
the polls—an obligation that he is jourly

We have no idea that the people
entertain any such notion as that. Sacramento-ought-to have the Congressman from
this district; and will have bim if her citizens
are loyal to themselves. We hopa to see
such a majority in this county for Mr. Johnson that it would be no half-hearted indorsement of the people, but an emphatic and unmistakeable testimonial not only to the distinguished citizen himself, but to the fact
that the people of this community are alive
to their own interests, and that their are

That is the way we feel about Mr. John

the right direction, that his. industry neve:

+ OeLooking Toward Us.
The people of the Eastern States are taking more interest in the result of the election
in this State than they. are in that of the
State of New York. California is considered the leading State of the Pacific -group,
and it has‘ greater interest in protection
than any other State on the Coast. There
is not an industry but what requires protective laws to make it profitable, The wool,
raisins, prunes, nuts, barley, fruits of ali
kinds, canned goods, wines, brandies, jute
mills, cotton mills are dependent’ upon pro»

with its varied interests, all requiring” pro-J ir

Should California fail it will be heralded all

promises to continue indefinitely, judging
from the large nu:ber of communications
which appear every wed. More or less
interest is taken in these letters by the public, and some of the opinions and ideas that
are expressed are quite original, but many
of them are thé same old arguments, in the
same old clothing, that have been put before
