As reports from various parts of the county continue to come. in, it becomes more and more apparent that Willard P. Calkins will receive the united support of the Republicans ou the day of electicn. This is as if should be. The nomination for County Clerk was not of fiis seeking— indeed, it came to him as a spontaneous and free-will offering trom the authorized representatives of the party in convention assembled at Grass Valley. In accepting it’he put himself under a moral obligation to use his best efforts to achieve victory at the polls—an obligation that he is jourly fulfilling by a canvass that is everywhere > Ff THE DAILY TRANSCRIPT (Established Sept. 6. 1860.) Sacramento-ought-to have the Congressman from this district; and will have bim if her citizens are loyal to themselves. We hopa to see such a majority in this county for Mr. Johnson that it would be no half-hearted indorsement of the people, but an emphatic and unmistakeable testimonial not only to the distinguished citizen himself, but to the fact that the people of this community are alive to their own interests, and that their are ° ready to pull together whenever the public 4 good calls them. That is the way we feel about Mr. John son; We believe that he is the best man in the district to represent our people in Congress. We know that his ambition lies in the right direction, that his. industry neve: lags, that his faculty of tact would help his vastly in his new field, and that his com-. manding ability would enable him to do more for the people than any other citizen of the district could do. It seems to us, county manifest a fixed determination to accord with their-ardent and positive support, but scores of Democrats and Populists openly and freely say they propose to give him their votes, : Mr. Calkins will prove as popular a County Clerk as Nevada county has yet had. Heiis an experiencéd and intensely practica] business man; He is one of those concerning whom their 8 neighbors say, ‘‘His word is as good as his bond.”’ He is frank, cordial and genial in his intercourse with people, not only at election time, but at all other times. He ig such a man as the public like and have full confidence in. citizens. + OeLooking Toward Us. The people of the Eastern States are taking more interest in the result of the election in this State than they. are in that of the State of New York. California is considered the leading State of the Pacific -group, and it has‘ greater interest in protection than any other State on the Coast. There is not an industry but what requires protective laws to make it profitable, The wool, raisins, prunes, nuts, barley, fruits of ali kinds, canned goods, wines, brandies, jute mills, cotton mills are dependent’ upon pro» tective laws for profitable existence, The State cannot compete with the 25 cents per day labor of foreign countries without pro‘ i ; indeed, that the reasons why Grove L, tection, ie eeJohnson ought to be elected are so palpable . The eyes of . the Eastern States are dipublicans and prptectionists of the country expect that the Queen State of the Pacific, with its varied interests, all requiring” pro-J ir tection to ensure profitable returns, will rol] up a big majority for the protection ticket. Should California fail it will be heralded all over the country that the State repudistes protection and is satistied with free trade and adversity. ‘To win requires united action and a solid front of all protectionists. Division of our forces means defeat. Vote right and vote solid and receive the commendation of the country. More or less interest is taken in these letters by the public, and some of the opinions and ideas that are expressed are quite original, but many of them are thé same old arguments, in the same old clothing, that have been put before the people so long and” so often that the average person is familiar therewith.
