WEDNESDAY.....Oct. 23, 1901 nner} Strange Disappearance. an Employe of Robert Latta Leaves Without Yuck Ado. Eugene Gray, who has been em. ployed at Robert Latta’s livery stable, on Broad street, is missing, and the attending circumstances are somewhat strange. Mr. Latta went to Marysville the first of last week}. and left Gray in charge of the stable. The livery man returned from the > valley town late last Saturday night. Sunday morning Mr. Latta went to his place of business and after waiting awhile took a look around the premises. The horses had all been attended to, and everything seemed to be all right. He then made a search for Gray, but he could not be found, and nothing has been heard since as to his whereabouts. Re The missing young man has been in the employ of Mr. Latta for some time and had always been faithful and attentive in the discharge of his duties. we Rich Specimen Rock. Richard Noell has on exhibition at his shop on Main street some fine specimen ore from a ledge near Graniteville. The case of McCarthy vs. the Gaston Ridge Mining Company is still on . trial in the Superior Court and will " probably last the rest.of this week. Sheridan Disabled. WasHincton, October 22— Word was received atthe War ‘Department today that the transport Sheridan had arrived at Nagasakiin a disabled condition, and would not be ready to leave that port for three weeks. The Sheridan was on her way from Manila to San Francisco. She carries about 800 short-term soldiers, 289 sick soldiers, and 19 insane soldiers. No details were received aa to the trouble’ with the Sheridan, The transport Warren had been sent from Manila to Nagasaki to receive the sick passengers from the disabled transport. 2 Fly Killed Him. . coher 22—The doctors here are greatly interested in the case of a . young man, 23 years old, who has jnst died after a six months’ painful illness which puzzled the physicians, including German specialists. Shortly before bis death bis ailment was diagnosed as the result of the hatching of . eggs of a blue bootie fly, which the patient had swallowed, causing perforation of the intestines,. They ordered Express Messenger Charles to open the door and when refused blew the door out with dynamite and then riddled the car with bullets. Messenger Charles kept up a continuous fire with a shotgun and the robbers repeatedly threw dynamite bombs into the car, but they were promptly thrown out before they exploded. ‘The robbers held the engineer in front of them but the Messenger managed to keep up ting the engineer. The robbers finally left the express car and went through the mail car, taking the registered mail. She -brought a number of passengers and about $1,500,000 in treasure.
