TuLEPHONE No. 4. MONDAY......0CT. 25, 1897. THE TRANSCRIPT. early sketches, “will you kindly brush that mosquito off the end of my nose ? You are nearer to it than I am!” He even enjoyed the ghastly compliment paid to it by Watkins, the Siskiyou humorist, in the suggestion that, with the shallow burial of the body belonging to posed to serve as a monument on which toinscribe a becoming recognition of the lofty fortitude of the uncomplaining saint who had borne the burden of it through life. I recall the first meeting of Delano and Paige. _ The latter, it may be remarked, was exceedingly plain-visaged with shaggy brows and a nose suggestive of excess of weight rather than of size. The introduction was sought by Delano. Paige was at his “case,” putting one of his sermons in type without hmanuscript. 4 After shaking hands, Delano stared quizzically into the face of Paige fora moment, and then exclaimed: “Well, y until f We TWO PIONEER WRITERS. ‘YS. ‘ g Sg ae ant to tak Bie They Were Both Well Known: and° Resided in Nevada County. e . : is Shoes Interesting Sketch of John R. Mr. Ridge was a journalist, being I. connected with papers at Grass Valley, its each, Marysville and San Francisco. He 5 cents, was an editor of repute and a writer of graceful verse. He was an educated half-caste Cherokee Indian, and came to the Pacific Coast as early as 1850, at f the end of a long and bloody struggle between the Ridge and Ross factions for tribal control. The latter tri__. aumphed and Ridge, after feeding his hatred with the blood of more than one of his enemies, abruptly left the Chérokee Nation, never to return. Ridge was tall and graceful, with finely cut aboriginal features and a complexion barely suggestive of Indian blood. To his friends he was loyal and confiding; to his enemies outspoken and defiant. He loved nature and his soul was full of tenderness and song. The great waters of the ocean . awed him, and we sometimes strolled ¢ ogether along the open beach south : of .ort Point, when all was a wilderness ¥, eSt of Yerba Buena Cemetery, to listen to “ke voices of the waves. To the end of his life the world saw enly. sunshine in the face of Delano, while his heart shuddered in the shadows of griefs harsh enough to have made him a misanthrope. His wife died, and there was left to his care an only son, who from infancy to the age of manhood had been a bed-ridden and helpless cripple, and an only daughter, who became hopelessly insane before reaching her twentieth year. His home sorrows were too sacred for the world to share, and he sank under them all the sooner because he bore the burden all alone. “J NEVER found a medicine that hit my case like Hood’s Sarsaparilla. He was the author of ' small volume relating to the life and /~~adventures of Joaquin Murietta, the noted California bandit, and after his death a collection of his poems was . printed for the benefit of his family. The black ones, studded with diamonds or pearls, or today. The fashionable cross must be antique looking. Groesbeck of Cincinnati never took another law case after his defense of President Andrew Johnson. ‘‘The brilliant speech which won that case,” says the Cincinnati Oommercial Tribune, ‘‘ proved the man’s remarkable will and intellectual pow: ers, He had been so ill as to be confined to his bed, and on the day of the trial, and while lying in bed, he jotted down on a sheet of foolscap paper the main points of his defense. He was driven to the tribunal in a carriage, unable to walk, and spoke extempore for four hours and a half. At the close article {1 was voted upon and the president acquitted without the taking up of any of the other articles. Since that time Mr. Groesbeck had lived a life of quiet and retirement. In 1872 he built Elmburst, a noble house of superb proporsions, commanding a river view of unsurpassed beauty. ’’ will You Do. cross if she is so fortunate as to possess . both, were highest in favor, as they are .
