Kelly was an inveterate . gambler, and, like John L. Sullivan, . be bad a heart which constantly led . him to do acts of charity. Kelly was . in his element when at the race track. . He got hold of more ‘‘ good things’’ that . went wrong than the average bettor, . but he was always cheerful whether a . winner or a loser. One day Mike went . over to. Guttenberg, when the hilltop; track was flourishing, and after two races had been run he had just $20 and _. enough change with which to get back to the city. As ~“Kelwalked—into—thebetting ring preparatory to the third race he saw on Bookmaker Ike Thompson’s slate: Tue Ohio Democratic managers have been warned that ex-candidate Bryan, who intends to deliver a series of speeches in Kentucky, will probably select spots near the banks of the Ohio river, so that a convenient south wind may carry his voice’ into Ohio, this being the only manner in which he will be abte to address the people of that State by reason of the rigid quarantine which the Democratic managers Nor onty does the Pr son reform school at Ione appear to be grossly mismanaged, but the school at Whittier and the Napa Asylum for the insane i are being subjected to similar charges that seem to be well founded. A FooT-pap stood up 4 couple of ladies at Pacific Grove the other night, and some people express surprise that such athing should happen in a town so famous for its morality. They forget that the Grove isa summer resort and.that although thé summer visitors have all left the permanent residents must continue to make an honest living out of somebody. ‘Ir 1s REAL mean of the Democratic leaders in all the States where campaigns are now in progress to shut out Towne, Bryan, and all the other silver orators, and compel them to seek county fairs in Arkansas and Tennessee as a place to which they may give vent to their suppressed emotions. The Cherokee Mine. The Oroville Mercury says that for the first time in fifteen years, or since the big main drain tunnel of the mine was run, eight-hour shifts are being employed at the Cherokee mine in Buttecounty. In that part of the mine leased from the bond-holders by H. D. Gage, an inclined tunuel seven by six is being run, and by the three shifts is being run ahead at the rate of 250 feet a month. An upraise in the channel is expected to be made by the first of the year. The gravel is raised by a friction hoist run by a four-fout Pelton wheel under 300 foot pressure. N. S. G W., Notice.
