N. P. BROWN. L. 6. CALKINS.
Tue Los Angeles Times has published a list of 72 voters in the county of
San Bernardino who have recently received, under the Congressional frank
of J. G. Maguire, documents advocating
the Single Tax. This, as the Marysville Appeal suggests, is the best possible evidence that heis giving active
support to the crusade of the Single
Taxers. Through the use of his franking privilege, the dissemination of
Single Tax literature is relieved of the
cost of postage. But the fact that he
is franking this sort of reading matter
to the voters of California serves tostil}]
further identify him with the hateful
scheme of confiscation which is thus
trying to gain converts. It is useless
for Maguire to pretend that the Single
Tax is not an issue when heis doing all
he can to fasten it upon the State.

extravagant pledges as to what he
would do if elected in the way of reducing freight rates. These pledges he
has made no pretense of fulfilling, and
he is now being arraigned by press and
people for his perfidy and demagogy.
So faras we have observed he has not
been up to this. time able to find

Tue Sacramento fusionists are out in
a card charging that I. Boysen, a photographer who used to be located at
Nevada City, broke faith with them recently by announcing himself as an independent candidate for Supervisor.
Joun P. Irisu, the ablest Democratic
orator in the State, has come out in opposition to Maguire and the fusion
campaign. The fusionists are “getting
it in the neck” all around.

WHY THE GENERAL STOOD.
A Beautiful Patriotic Custom T. at Nevada
City Should Adopt.
The other day when Gen. Barnes of
San Francisco was here and addressed
a Republican -meeting at the theater
one of the selections played by the
band was “The Star Spangled Banner.”
While the piece was being rendered
Gen. Barnes arose from his chair on
the platform and remained standing
until the band had finished playing
the national air. Many people in the
audience did not know that this was a
mark of reverence for our national air.
It has been the custom for some time
in most of the large cities throughout
the country for audiences at public
gatherings to arise and remain standing whenever “The Star Spangled Banuer” is being played. In some places
the orchestras at theaters play the
above selection at the close of the entertainment, the audience standing until the music ceases and then passing
out.

To be Submitted Tomorrow.
The case of McAulay against the
Tahoe Ice Company will not get to the
jury till tomorrow, which will be the
eighth day of the trial. There has
been a stubborn but brilliant battle
between attorneys Walling and Ford
and a great amount of testimony has
been taken. The arguments will probably consume the most of tomorrow.

next Monday it cannot furnish them
with water for hoisting or drilling purposes, but will manage to keep their
pumps going: Brunswick, Maryland,
Massachusetts Hill, Empire, Central,
North Star, Omaha and Allison Ranch.
There must be four or five days’ rain
before the South Yuba Company can
give them a full supply again. In the
meantime over 600 of the 800 men
working at Grass Valley will be thrown

It is hard to tell from reading some

Stomach
Trouble
Stomach trouble is the common
name applied to a derangement of
the system which is kéenly felt but
vaguely understood. It may mean
inability to retain food or to digest
it. It may mean nausea, pain after
eating, fullness, inordinate craving
for food, or entire lack of appetite.
Whatever it means, there’s trouble,
and it’s with the stomach. If you

Health of Oakland, is here to consult
with members of the State Board of
Health regarding the position of State
Veterinarian‘which that body has conferred upon him. It is likely that the
doctor-may make a tour of the State
and inquire into the condition of cattle in regions where Texas fever, anthrax and other dangerous diseases are
said to prevail, and make a report as to
the state of affairs and the remedial
agents which ought to be employed. in
stamping out the disease.

Fi tey Dogan In Ais Original Creation
of the Yellow Kid.
The public of this country has began’s Alley during the last few years.
, That playground of wits is now looked
on as one of the best known features .
many stories, caricatures, cartoons and .
tales published about the place and its
people by R. F. Outcalt, of the New
York World, and ather journalists.
The “Yellow Kid” is as well known as)
Admiral Dewey, and the theater pa-!
trons of this city will be pleased to}
learn that Mickey Dogan, the famous
. original Yellow Kid, is to be at the
. theater to-night together with his side
; partner, Tiddlewinks. They are com‘ing with tbat most laughable and
highly successful comedy, “Hogan’s
Alley.” “Hogan’s Alley” is a merry bit
of nonsense, with just enough plot to
make a continuous interesting story.
jItis constructed arouud the original
‘characters who reside in Hogan’s Alley,
;and keeps its audience in screams of
. laughter from curtain to curtain. Ho_gan, the boss of the Alley; Brogan his
rival; Lix the Yellow Kid’s sweetheart;
the goat and all the rest of the merry
throng are in it. The company is
headed by Campbell and Caulfield and
includes besides Mickey Dugan and
Tiddlewinks, Thomson and Green, W.
Frank Rhodes; Alice Joy, Estelle Clayton, Annie Driver, Gladys Castleton
and Gracie King.
It is said of Mr. Maguire that he
-knows a good horse when he rides it,
and that he has no notion of swapping
horses in the middle of a stream, but
the only horse that Mr. Maguire knows
is the anti-espee nag on which he rode
into political prominence, rode into congress four times, and is now trying to
ride into the gubernatorial chair. But
the nag is getting old and decrepit. Its
ribs may be counted through its hide
from a far off, and Mr. Maguire will
soon be afoot and alone in the midst
of vast popocratic desolation. The
building of the Valley road is killing
the local ‘‘espee” question, and the recent action of congress has taken the
matter of the debts/of the aided roads
out of issue. By cutting off that upon
which Maguire’s charger feeds the old
nag is made a candidate for the boneyard. .
Maguire stands for the single tax.
The single tax stands for confiscation.
If the funding bill were really the
Washington. If the single tax were
the issue, the call would be to Sacramento. What, then, do his actions
proclaim the issue to be?

a few years later he was elected

years upon the supreme bench in this
state. During all these years of judicof East side, New York, owing to the ix! service to the people he has been of
fnquestioned uprightness of character,
and undoubted ability as.a jurist. The
opposition party has not seen fit to attack Juatice McFarland on the ground
of fitness for re-election to the axalted
position he has he!d so long. They
have not questioned his ability, his
honesty, or his industry, but, as with
have made faces at him and alleged
that he at some time in the years of
long ago filed a brief as attorney for the
Southern Pacific company,a fact which
is held to disqualify any Republican
aspirant. for a judicial or other office,
but is not to be considered when a
Democrat has aspirations of a similar
nature. The fact that Stephen M.
White was for many years attorney for
‘the Southern Pacific eompany was regarded as a mere testimony to his ability as a lawyer, whereas a similar. testimony in the years of long ago to the
legal aitainments of Mr. Justice McFarland is held as a disqualification and a
brand of ownership. But the people
of Californ a are not to be influenced
by considerations _so_contemptible.
Judge McFarland will be re-elected by
& majority satisfying to the pride of
any man, and as pleasing in the eyes
of his constituents as in his own eyes.
The time has gone by when a deserving public offidial can be turned down
