OF SUBSORIPTION <> 19 tae Por Week, (fatima nics chgpeiecremepvesie Say amas . . has been furnished by q piety is made a feature in financial promoting are usually some queer results. A proof of this the evidence adduced in a law . _ suit in Indianapolis between parties interested in the _ New American Oil and Refinery Company, the directors of which have been sued by stockholders for unlawful conversion. of funds. ‘ ‘Fhe concern was organized by prominent church members, and was a Baptist organization througout. Each meeting of the directors was opened with prayer for divine guidence and the blessing of Providence on the undertakings. corpor ation’s One tenth of the profits were to be devoted tothe church. The promoters issued frequent bulletins indicating very successful operations, and at the end of the first quarter the sum of $1,734 was turned over to the Baptist Home and Foreign Missionary Society as the Lord’s share of the profits. It is needless to say the brethren fell over themselves in subscribing for the stock, But it transpired that the x company. was drilling in a dry hole and.that the alleged profits were entirely fictitious. Then the stockholders sued for a return of over to the church, the money handed At the hearing it was testified to that the pious promoter forged pipe line certificates to show that the company was doing a fine business and making money, a The humor of asking divine guidance in such a proceeding does not appear to the stockholders who staked their coin on this show of religious zeal, The minister who unconsciously figured at the prayerful. meetings of the directors is accused of leading his clerical countenance to a swindle, Doubtless this is a slander on the good man. His merits ought to commend themselves to John D. Rockefeller, who could hardly find a man better fitted for the position of chaplain of the Standard Oil University. He evidently believes the Lord helps those who help themselves, TOE Dons ee A Resume of News From That Lively . Town.
