THE DAILY FRANSCRIPT NEW POSTOFFICE OUTFIT.
The Proposed Change Will Be Made
Very Soon,
It is expected that the proposed changes
and improvements in the arrangement and
equipment of the Postoffice at this city will
be made between the Ist and Ith. of . December, The work will begin on a Satur=
day night, and by working that night and
Sunday the change will be nearly completed
by Sunday night, so that the public will
be only ightiy discommoded,
The first thing to do willbe to remove
the boxes, stands, tables and other furniture out of the building. The old floor will
be taken up and a fine new one, of selécted
Oregon pine, put down, This work will be
done at night, , The following morning a
crew of workmen will hegin to get the place
‘in shape for the new outfit of boxes, etc.
There is to be a space of eight feet from
the entrance to where the boxes begin, and
public as now, ‘both will be utilized. In
the summer time the glass doora will be
removed and the office front be left open.
By this change there will be 250 feet. of
lobby room. The money order and general
delivery windows will be directly facing the
entrance doors, while the mail boxes will
face the samé as now, extending towards
the back end of the room.
Tn all there are to be 514 boxes, of which
24 are to be large size for hotels, offices and
other places that receive a large amount of
mail matter, The fronts of the large boxes
will be of solid bronze and glass, avd on
opening will drop down almost on a level
with the bottom of the box, thus affording
a small shelf upon which the mail can’ be
laid while taking it from the box, The
fronts of the small boxes will be of métal
and glass and will swing to the right. Each
of the boxes will be provided with one of
the celebrated Yale locks, no two of which
can be opened with the same key. The
boxes will be close together, no space being
lost, and the 514 new boxes will not také
op much more room than the 250 ould ones,
In addition to the. fine appearance which
the boxes will give to the place, the sur-1
rounding plate glass and wood work will be
of a high order, and will add greatly to the
looks of the office, The money order and
general delivery windows will be quite
handsome, as considerable plate and art
glass will be used, The interior arrangement of the office will be very convenient
and in all respects up with the times.
W. H. Morrison, Pacific Coast representative of the Yale-Towne Company of
Stamford, Conn,, who was here recently to
take measurements for the new outfit, was
instructed by Messrs, Rector Bros, to put
in their best grade of work, and when the
change is completed Nevada City’s Postoffice will hé one of the neatest and. best
equipped in the State,

The Greadudtioot Bridge Breaks
Down. This Afternoon,
About half-past 1 o'clock this afternoon,
while Ed. J. Baker was crossing the wooden
bridge at the foot of Broad street, one of
large stringers broke in two, precipitating
Baker with his two horses and wagon load
of furniture into the creek below, a distance
of. about twelve feet or more, Mr. Baker
had been to the depot and was about in the
middle of the bridge when the long timbers
which reaches from one bank to the other,
on the side nearest the Main-street bridge,
snapped in two,
Witnesses hurried to the assiétance of
Baker, who was found to be seriously hurt
by the fall. He was carried to the Union
Hotel, where Dr, Tickell made a \hurried
examination of his injuries and did what he
could to afford him relief. It was found
that his right shoulder, side ‘and bask (Were
badly bruised, and probably the bones
crushed some, but this could not be determined without a more thorough examina,
tion,
As soon as Baker regained coneciquendes
and began to rally from the effects of
the terrible jar*-he had sustdined he
was removed to his home on Factory street,
It isa yreat wonder that he was not killed,
The last vehicle to cross the bridge before
the acci ‘ent was the Bloomfield stage, which
was driven ever at a rapid gait, It is supposed that this strained the bridge and
‘caused the long iron truas bolt to break, as
it was found to be after the accident, The
bolt had pulled away from the nut, thereby
taking away the support to the stringer.
Dr, A. Chapman was crossing the bridge
atthe time, He was near one end and feeling it give he made a jump and landed.on
solid footing as the bridge went down,
The horses-were not hurt much, and the
damage te the wagon and furniture was
slight.

MURDERED.
A Masked Stage Robber
Kills Arthur Meyer.
SHOT DOWN IN COLD BLOOD.
Two Shots Fired at a Passenger,
Who Saved His Life by
Be Running Away.
The stage which left North Bloomfield
this morning for this city had on board
Arthur Meyer, the driver, and one passenger,
a, gentleman named Clarence Bovee, who
is from Minnesota, Sierra county. He oc*
cupied a seat on the box with the driver.
When the stage reach a point about half a
mile this side of Nelson’s ranch, on Rook
creek, three miles f
short distance from banker Cummings
was murdered fifteen years ago, a masked.
man suddenly came out from the brush on
the left hand side of the road and covering
Meyer with @ pistol ordered him to atop his
horses,
Meyer stopped the team and the robber
conimanded him to dismount,
‘I can’t do that ; the team will run away
if I do,” was the reply,
‘*Get down, God damn you,” sheuted
‘the road ‘agent, ‘raising his weapon ominously,
“I say I will not do it,” coolly answered
the fearless young man, at the same time.
putting one hand behind him as if reachiug
for a weapon—a thing he never carried, by
the way.
Immediately the robber began shooting at
Meyer. “At the sevond shot poor Meyer fell
forward into the boot, deaf. ‘
Bovee jumped off the stage and ran back
down the read, As he did so the highwayman fired twice at him, but without: effect.
Bovee met Peter Arbogast, who was at
work in that vicinity, and informed him of
what had happened, Both men went up to
where the stage had been stopped, and getting aboard came on to town, Arbogast
handling the ribbons and sending the horses
for all that was in them, in order to give
the alarm as soon as possible. The stage
came down Broad street about 1 o’clock Pp.
M,, at-euch rapid speed that all who noticed
it pass suspected quickly that something unusyal had happened. .
Before the stage had hardly reached the
National Exchange Hotel, where it stopped,
there was a rush of people to find out what
had happened, The wildest excitement
burst forth as soon as it became known
that a foul and cowardly murder had been
committed and that Arthur Meyer was the
victim,
and looked at the dead body as it lay’ in
the hoot of the stage. 2
Mr. Bovee is an invalid and was se terribly unstrung by the terrible deed of which
he was a witness, that it was with difficulty
says the road-agent was roughly dressed
and wore.along inask, He was apparently
a medium-sized man and would probably
weigh 130 or 140 pounds, Bovee saw nothing more of him after he (Bovee) jumped
from the stage and ran down the road,
Meyer's body was removed to the undertaking parlors, where an inquest was held
by Coroner Daniels,
In a short time after the arrival of the
stage over one hundred armed mepi in different parties, were on their way. to the
scene of the murder, Captain Nihell
placed the military rifles at the disposal of
citizens and got together a number of the
members of Company C and started out.
Sheriff Douglass organized a posse and
went out ina conveyance, It is the intention to scour the country thoroughly,
Word has been sent out to all telegraph
and telephone stations where the murderer
might.go, and no stone will be left unturned
to capture him,
A reward of $500 has been olfervi for
/the arrest and conviction of the murderer,
At‘the point where the stage was stopped
there ia quite a.grade, and the team is generally given ite time in making the ascent.
This fact Was taken advantage of by the
robber,
_ Mr. Bovee says the man did not demand
of Meyer to pass out the treasure box, but
apparently shot him because Meyer argued
with him as to the foolishness of stopping
that stage. Very little treasure is ever-carried on this line, not enough to justify any
one to attempt to hold up the atage,
Aa far as can be ascertained the robber
did not take anything. The leather pocket
in which small packages of coin are carried
had not been:disturhed and the money ip
Meyer’s pockets had not been taken, As
Meyer , fell the lines dropped under his
body and were held there, which probably
accounts for the team not running away.
The'road agent evidently becime frightened after killing Meyer and made his
escape without delay. It is te be hoped
thathe will be speedily caught and dealt
with in the manner he deserves,
Arthur Meyer, the dead stage driver, waa
well liked by all who knew him, His
untimely end, Mer, Bovee says he was one
