200M,” NEVADA CITY MAIL TIME TABLE {ors age y Vestern *Excepting Grass Valley Chicago ~ Park, Colfax. 4: Brass Valley.--jerra City. , Bioomtie nybert.-ou Bet OnFICH / OF ‘ “ndays and Holidays— HARRISS, THE ARTIST TRAUP. He Pictures the Condition of ‘Things in ) the Oakland City. Prison. George W. Harriss, the artist tramp, Ljho was in the county jail here some ime ago, and who many of our people Iwill remember on account of the pic. ures drawn by him, is now in the city. prison at Oakland. It seems that “the Sail is overrun With rats. and “is. .other-: (wise unfit for habitation. In yesteriday’s Call appears & sketch drawn by Harriss, representing two prisoners usleep, in; their bunks and the rats Frunning over them and perched upon them. The picture was sent to Chief bof Police Lloyd as @ reminder to him . : fof the unfit éondition of the prison. In an interview Harriss said: “I have ‘had all kinds of companions in prison, Fbut have never been so overrun with : attention as in this modern Athens, as ‘you call it. There aré some things a gentleman objects to. Being used a8 & Pplatform during sleeping hours for a) ‘circus and hippodrome of overgrown. Frats is one of those objectionable features to which a true Bohemian is exposed at times—and this is one of those times. I have been here before, but 1 I believe there is an element in the mu nicipal government favorable to boodle and opposed to a tax Jevy that does not, ‘permit of the prison cook being able to vsatisty the natural cravings of-the rats. On account of the strict economy now being practiced in the prison the rats . have to look out for themselves, and it /is very unpleasant for us. “My stay here will not. be long, but I “thought I would do something toward helping others who may follow me. I ' have depicted my first night’s experience here, and trust that the Chief will . place it before the Commissioners. Years ago I was amused by reading . ‘The Pied Piper of Hamelin,’ but now it interests me.” Queen Victoria’s Name. It idiot generally known, says the . London Mail, that the Queen was baptized Alexandrina Victoria. Alexandrina was given to her by her father, the Duke of Kent, in compliment ‘to the Emperor of Russia. Tt was. in-; tended that she should bear the name. Georgiana, after hex uncle, the Prince Regent, subseque George IV, as ell as after her grandfather, . the » reigning King, Geo. II. The Prince F Regent desired that Georgiana should be the first name of the infant,” but he Duke of Kent insisted that itshould ‘be Alexandrina. ‘The Prince Regent thereupon declared that: the next . served. ‘Those districts that have returned the same men to Congress for] the. popocratie money plank ef 1896. . 6 #he “Young Intrepids will play a ,. Many years have always been the best ‘. served. bécause: their representatives by thei¥ acquaintance with other members as well as with Congressional . affairs-and methods are able to exert infiyénces which no new member. can. For this reason’ those districts that ‘send new men to Congress every tern are apt £0 be ill served by “the represeiitatives and neglected by. others. The Second California District was am exception to this. rule during the ‘last Congress because it was represented by a man of” unusual force of mentary affairs and the courage to break through the musty. traditions of Congress which discourage a. member in his first term: Mr. Johnson now comes before-the"people for re-election with all these considerations in his favor, ‘and besides thems thorough devotion to protection and all other measures that are espoused by the Republican party and are. calculated to restore prosperity. Mr. Johnson's position en.silver is, perhaps, somewhat too advanced to suit the more conservative Republicans, but when itis remembered that the majorities in Congress have been unfriendly and even unjust to silver, it is advisable that there should be in that body men like Mr. Johnson, who, even if some what too strongly in favor of silver ‘help to check the Eastern tendency to go to the extreme of unfriendliness to it. In all that interests the Second ' District, in all that interests San Joaquin county, in all ‘that’ interests Stockton, Grove L.Johnson has shown himself to be not only in full accord with the people, but active and efficient in promoting their interests. Against his opponent, personally, the Independent has naught to urge, but against the platform upon which he stands and-which he advocates the objections are many: and great. His speeches in defense of that. platform which contains the vicious low tarifi plank, the wildest of currency fallacies that threaten to disturb business, are greatly Mr, De Vries. Besides this Mr. De. Vries has no legislative experience and should he be elected he would find himself in a powerless and-unpopular minority, which, were his “ years, experience and ability greater, would leave. him a position in which he could begpf little or no use to his district. . Those: young Re-publicans of San Joaquin county who jean towards. him from personal preference, from’ friendship that they have cherished for him from boyhood and from a desire to honor him as a friend, should remember that. the interests of their country, their State and their home should be superior to ' name. Georgiana could not stand sec> ond to any other name whatever, atid that therefore the infant must. not pear it at all. It is certain that if the . Duke of Kent had given way to the . Prince Regent her Majesty would have been known as Georgiana, as that . being a family name, could not, like © Alexandrina, be very well dropped, and the more poetical Victoria would not . have been what it has been for sixty ; years. tO L. S. Calkins For Senator. . The Grass Valley Tidings says:—L. . S. Calkins, Republican nominee for . State Senator from the Third District, . has created an excellent impression during his campaigning tour. Each . audience that he has addressed realized and acknowledged that he is @ keen, wide-awake, brainy man, who has @ thorough grasp of all National, State _ and county questions. have known him for many years in Ne-. Those who vada county can assure all that he will reflect. credit upon his constituency. Let no Republican or sound money man fail to vote for L. 8. Calkins. ——— Deafness Cannot Be Cured.
