> CRIPTURAL grounds for opposing Free-Trade and rec‘ity in competitive products are cited by O. S. Harmon of Brooklyn in a letter to the American Econ-. . + 11.6 bed of the Creek. Be dele With the first text, ‘He that provideth not for his own,” etc., Protectionists are familiar, and in it they find ample warrant for the economic faith that isin them. The ‘second citation brought forward by Mr. Harmon is not so. trite, but it'admirably enforces the poiat that special trade dickers aré both unfair and immoral, chapter 25, verses 13, 14, 15, we are told that among the specific injunctions and commands which Moses laid upon “the people of Israel by divire authority were the following: “Thou shalt not have in thy bag divers weights, a great and a small. “Thou shalt not have i in thine house divers measures, 4 great-and a small. “But thow shalt have a perfect and just weight; a perfect and just measure shalt thou have: that thy days may be lengthened in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.” This was the first law laid down for the government of trade and commerce. For over six thousand years the business of the world has been transacted under the law deliv—. ; ered by the Lord unto Moses in the tabernacle and by Moses delivered unto the Israelites. It is the law of honesty, of fair dealing, of equal treatment of one and all. Under this law. the United States cannot give overweight to France or Cuba and underweight to Great Britain or Germany. All must be treated alike. Reciprocity in competing products violates this law. It contemplates that certain favored countries. may, by reason of special Tariff preferences, sell their products for a higher price in the United States than the price for which similar products may be sold by other countries. “Not only that, but it gives to the countries thus favored certain advantages greater than those enjoyed by certain American producers, thus falling under the condemnation: “He that provideth not for his own, and especially for they of his own house, hath denied the faith and is worse than an infidel.” Protection provides for the people of our own country, and:it does-not have in its bag ‘‘divers weights, a great and a small,” nor in its house, “divers measures, a great anda small.” (ier Tacoma’ Beals ir Coad Ser The new United States cruiser “Tacoma” which was given her trial spin yesterday on San Francisco Bay, exceeded her contract speed and made a record of 17 knots an hour over the measured mile course, It was the first time the vessel had.been under her ber, 1900, and on June 24, 1902, she was lannched.
