‘Severus Shaffer, who does an eqhilibristic
act that surpasses anything of the kind
ever seen in this city, was greeted with a
shower of bouquets at the Orpheum Monday night. During the performance of his
marvelous act the audience curbed 4s -en“ thusiasm to a reasonable degree; but at the
conclusion of his act there was a spontaneous
outburst of applause and from every portion of the theatre beautifu) bunches of

Pursuing the Assassin of
: Arthur [leyer.
’
A FEW, CLUES TO WORK ON.
The Wretch Tracked From the Scene
of the Murder to the Washington Road.
The posses that went out yesterday afternoon in search of the highwayman who shot
Arthur Meyer, thé Bloomfield stage driver,
returned last evening. The tracks made
by the villain were carefully examined and
measurements taken, After killing Meyer
he went back into the brush, going for a
short distance in the direction of ‘Nelson’s
ranch and then making off up the ridge,
‘Fhe mask that he wore and an old slouch
‘hat were picked up near the scéne of the
crime, Not very far away were found the
remnants of alunch, also a copy of the
Transorirr of a day or two previous, The
piece of cake that wus found appeared to be
& home-made article. It is supposed that
these things were left by the murderer, still
it is possible that the crumbs and paper
tnarked the lunching place of séme hunter
who passed through that part of the county..
The mask was made from a piece of lining
torn from a coat, The hat and mask are in
the possession of the officers,
The tracks were traced through the woods
and up to the Washington road on the ridge
above the Harmony mine, At the point
where they came into the Washington road
‘the tracks were identically the same as those
made by the road agent where the stage was
stopped, The officers feel satisfied that this
is the course the fellow took. In many
places the distance the tracks were apart
indicated that the person who made them
was on the run and jump.
When news of the terrible tragedy was
received here Sheriff Douglass was in Grass
Valley. He was immediately telephoned
toand in exactly twenty-five minutes he
was in this city and on his way to the spot
where the dastardly deed was committed.
This is pretty quick work, Last evening
the Sheriff returned from the search and
left on the night train for Colfax, where he
was joined by Sheriff Conroy of Placer
county and proceeded to Dutch Flat, It
was the intention to organize a posse at that
place this morning and scour the country in
the neighborhood of Towle Bros,’ logging
railroad, and-thence on down the Washington ridge towards this city,
This morning quite a party went out
towards Washington and Bear Valley to
look for the highwayman, but at this writing no werd has been received from them,
George Zink, who resides” on the San
Juan road, about five miles from this city
and three or four miles across ‘the country
from where the murder occurred, says that a
man answering the description of the one
whe held up the stage passed his place yesterday after the commission of the crime.
He was going towards town, _ ’
One or two persons are suspicioned and
the officers think they have a goad idea: of
who the guilty party is. They will do all
in their power to capture the right man,
and have, we understand, two or three
clues upon which to work,
At the inquest held by Coroner Daniels
yesterday afternoon the following persons
acted as jurors: E, Hampton, R. Tremaine,
George Davey, George A, Watson, Charles
Hartman, H, Calahan, I. Waters, O, Hartling, J. Hooper, The witnesses examined
were Clarence Bovee, who was the only
passenger on the stage, and Dr, R, M, Hunt,
who made an autopsy on the body.
The autopsy showed that but one bullet
struck Meyer,-entering his chest about two
inches to the left of the right nipple and
ranging ‘slightly downward severed the
aorta and lodged in the intercostal muscles
of the left side. The bullet, which was a
round one of the old-fashioned kind, was
slightly flattened by striking one of the
ribs near the point of lodgment. Had it
not been for this the ball probably would
have passed entirely, through the body,
Death was instantaneous.
Clarence H, Bovee, who was on the stage
with Moyer at the time of the killing, had
$160 with him. There was $150 gent from
Bloonifield to Frank Aumer of this city in
the leather pocket carried on: the driver's
seat, and some money in Meyer’s pockets,
Nothing was stolen and it is very evident
that the assassin became frightened lest
Por-fomebody should come along, and fled into
the brush, without further delay.

Uncalled For Insult.
Grass Valley was ‘flooded last night with
Copies of the Nevada City TRansontrr, oontaiuing ha f a dozen boom articles for Grove
L, Johnson. Newspapers cost money.
The above we copy from the Grass Valley
Union of this morning. The slur contained
therein is unworthy of a paper that claims
town was for the sole purpose of giving the
people there full particulars of the murder
of Arthur Meyer, the-falling of the Broad
atreet bridge, and the death of E, G, Waite.
We claim the same right that the Union
accords to itself in sending extra papers here
whenever anything startling occurs, without
being falsely charged, by innuendo, that
they are circulated at somebody else’s expense. The Union is welcomed to all the
capital it can make in m that small way,

The Venomous AntieMiner. {
No man can be named who has been. so
prominent in the fight againat the miners as
Geo, Ohleyer of Sutter county. He has
been the leader in the fight at all times, not
‘enly in this State but at the National Capital. He isthe man that insisted upon
Caminétti embodying in the mining bill the
penalty of a $5000 fine for dumping debris
into'any of the.rivers or tributaries thereof,
Now we learn upon the best of authority
that the wicked anti-hydraulicker, Geo,
Ohleyer, is the leader of Caminetti’s fight
in Yuba and Sutter counties. Ohleyer helieves that if Grove Johnson is elected that
the resumption of hydraulic mining will be
assured, while on the other hand if Caminetti is elected that industry will never be
resuscitated,
How any. voter residing in the mining
sections, under any circnmetances, can vote

The mining counties of California’ know

has been active and employment general,
Therefore we have not felt the effect of

and offer to work for far less wages than at
present, Then residents here, and particu.

what hard times mean. Vote for the representatives of protection: and all will be

We learn from what we consider a reliable source that there are from 100 to 200
names on the Great Register of this county
that are not legally entitled to be there.
The names are of men who have not been
residents of the State one year as provided
by law, and it is said that most of them are
at present residents of Grass Valley, Some
people think that a residence of six months
in the State gives them a right to vote.
That. waa the old law, but under the pres
ent law a citizen must have resided in the
State one year, in the county ninety days,
and in the precinct thirty days, and must
be registered at least fifteen days previous
to the election at which he desires to vote,
We understand that.the peracns who have
registered illegally are spotted and that
representatives of both the Demooratio and
Republican parties will be on hand on the
day of election to challenge their right to
vote, It will be well, therefore, for any
person who has not. been inthe State the
