Members of Pennsylvania Engine Company, No. 2, together with a few invited guests, had a very pleasant time last evening at the fire house on Broad street. It was the regular monthly meeting night, but after the usual business was transacted’ the tables were arranged and a nice chicken supper served. Although the menu might have been lacking somewhat iu variety it certainly was not in quality or quantity, and every one seemed to appreciate the goodness and abundance of the spread. Everybody was made welcome and all enjoyed: themselves to their full content. 1 The Board of City Trttstees had been invited, but only’two of the members were quet were of an impromptu order, but none the less interesting or pleasing on that account. Instrumental music. was furnished by Messrs, John Werry, Ed. W. Schmidt, W. P. Sigourney and F, E. Snell. Vocal selections were rendered by Joseph Northey, -~-. -George Bond and John Werry, and remarks were made by City Trustees J. C. Rich and T. H. €arr, Chief Engineer Sherman W. Marsh, Samuel Butler, Frank Dennis, J. B. Gray, William Scott, J. J. Jackson, Charles Hartmann and others. Altogether it was one of the most enjoyable affairs that Pennsylvania Engine Company has ever given, -{and will not soon be forgotten by those who had the pleasure of being present. ‘WHATEVER may be the cause of blanching, the hair may be restored to its original color by the use of that potent remedy Hall’s Vegetable Sicilian Hair Renewer, ~~ PERSONAL POINTERS. The following is submitted for consideration of the candidates who are starting out on the campaign. It is taken.from the Californian, published in Kern county, and is said to work like a charm: ‘‘Some candidates starting ont this week to visit the country made a refreshing change in the old-time plan of canvassing. Instead of laying out their money for whiskey and cigars they loaded their buggy with candy and chewing gum, to make glad the hearts of the little ones at the homes where they stopped. Summarized Mention of Minor Home Happenings Tonight the dramatic company of this city will present at Van’s Opera House in Grass Valley the sensational military drama, “American Born,” which will be put on with the full cast as given atthe Theater in this city a few nights ago. The company should be greeted with a full house. It is only half that distance between the mine and the mill, the cable being double. Robert Brown, 19 years old, son of ‘George Brown of Moore’s Flat, died at that place Tuesday of typhoid fever. Under the amendments. to the statutes of 1893 (page 303) the election board in every preccinct, of each city, where both city, and county officers are to be elected, must consist of twelve persons—three judges, three inspectors and six clerks. : This is quite an army in itself and it is supposed is intended to prevent bulldozing in the tenderloin districts of San Francisco, It only remains that this army should be properly drilled and provided with Winchesters. Took the First Prize. Two ex-Nevada countyans took the highest premiums at the late county fair held at Ventura. Ed. Morrill, youngest son of F. E. Morrill was given first premium for best display of millinery goods, Se SOE? eee A Fine Specimen, The Wilson Bros. and James Houck, of Downieville, found the finest specimen of gold we have ever seen, last Thursday afternoon, says the Downieville Messenger. Mr. Houck was hired by the Wilsons to go up where they had been pocket mining, in Hungry Mouth ravine, and run some of their-waste-dirt through the dry washer. While doing this he ran across a specimen that the Wilsons had thrown among the waste. It is bigger than a man’s hand and between the chunks of gold isa little crystalized rock. The whole thing weighs 38} ounces and they calculate that there is an even 30 ounces of gold, It is a very pretty specimen and could doubtless be sold for more than its actual value. The Wilson boys have now found four. different pockets in this ravine within 150 yards, and have taken out altogether $1,000 in the’ past couple of weeks, =e. He Formerly Conducted a. Dancing The following we find in the Marysville Appeal and refers to Prof. Holland who at one time conducted a dancing school at this place, but we believe did not make much of @ success of himself or his dancing school. The Appeal says: An individual styling himself ‘‘Professor” Holland, has been on parade in Marysville for a week or two past. His business is that of a dancing master, an avocation that would lead everyone to presume that the elements of a gentleman were necessary to successfully follow it. ‘Prof. Holland has‘a foul tongue, and on several occasions has been heard to express his displeasure at the lack of appreciation of him on the part of the general public. Once or twice he and his filthy talk have troubled the atmosphere at the Appeal office. His last visit was on Friday night, and on that occasien the whiskey-soaked fool undertook to direct matters in the composing room. Such a fellow is not entitled to the slightest consideration from decent people, and the Appeal’s advice to mothers and parents is to keep their children from his presence for fear of pollution. What his antecedents are the Appeal is not, at this time, able tostate, but enough is knowf of his characteristics to warrant the assertion that he is a braggart of the veriest type. A new whist club has been organized in this city and the memberé anticipate having a series of very interesting. meetings this winter. The first meeting was held last evening at-the rooms of Mr, and Mrs, James Cairns. If the good time that was had can be taken as a criterion of what future sessions of the club are to be, surely the happiest anticipations of the members will be fully realized. The first prize was won by Prof. A. M, Gray and Mrs. Fred E. Brown. The booby prize was awarded to M. Rosen-. berg and Mra. A. M. Gray. Two weeks from last evening the club will be entertained by Mr. and Mrs. H. J. Carter at the New York Hote], on which occasion a name for the club will be selected: When to Register. Every male naturalized citizen who shall have been naturalized ninéty days prior to any electien, every male citizen of the age of 21 years, or who will become of age on or before the day of election and who has resided in the State one year, in the county ninety days and. in the precinct thirty days, whose name has been enrolled on the Great Register fifteen days prior to election, shall be-a—-qualified voter. He has laid out two separate routes, one by way of Glenbrook Park and the Maryland mine, the other running through the old Sutton ranch and striking the main wagon road on top of the hill beyond Glenbrook. It has not been decided yet which route will be taken. oe Marvelous Results. From a letter written by Rev. J. Gunderman, of Dimondale, Mich., we are permitted to make this extract: ‘I have no hesitation in recommeding Dr. King’s New Discovery, as the results were almost marvelous in the case’ of my wife. While I was pastor oi the Baptist Church at Rives Junction she was brought down with Pneumonia succeeding La Grippe, Terrible paroxysms of coughing would last: hours with little interruption and it seemed as if she could not survive them. A friend recomjof heat and the ninth is a chemical ray, A NEW BRAND OF PEACHES. They Are Said to Be Fine and Are Marked *‘Vote for M.M. Estee."* The Fresno Republican says: A peach was left at this office yesterday which was grown in the orchard Of L. V. Hatch, near Oleander. It isa large cling, and on its side appears in red letters, ‘Vote for M. The letters are printed on the peach by sun light, and the process is simple. A piece of thin paper is used, and the letters cut out of it, and is then pasted on the fruit and is exposed to the sunlight while the fruit is ripening on; the tree. Where the letters are cut from the paper the sunshine colors the peel red, while all the rest remains white. The chemical process is the same as that which causes fruit,to turn red in ripening, and is the same agency that prints photographs. When a beam of sunlight is analyzed by a prism it is found to contain seven visible rays, corresponding to the seven colors of the rainbow, and two invisible, nine in all. The eighth is a ray called the actinic. This is the part of sunlight that has charge of nature's dye works, and gives color to the growing vegetation. This is the ray that printed on the peach the patriotic words, ‘Vote for M, +90 A’ vost of Ayer’s Sarsaparilla taken shortly before each meal helps digestion, Seinen 5 gles Grove L. Johnson. It Will Not Be Long Before the Drain Tunnel Will Be Finished. It is expected that the drain tunnel that is being run to tap the Reward mine will be completed in a few weeks. About 100 feet are yet to be run. This tunnel will drain the mine to a depth of 500 feet. It is the company’s intention to crowd work in the mine as soon as this tunnel is completed, and to.open up the property in a thorough manner, They have a good ledge, which is thought to be an extension of the old California mine. In running the drain tunnel several shoots of quartz were cut through, but only that which was im a direct line with the tunnel was taken out. Twenty tons of this rock was crushed a few days ago and paid about $20 per ton. The Reward is owned by R. C. Walrath, Joseph Thomas and others, and. is located near the old rifle grounds, We expect to see @ good force of men at work there before many months. The Telephone Line. The poles for the telephone line from this city to Marysville are being put up at a lively rate, Yesterday the Pett Hill House was reached and it was expected that by this evening Smartsville would be reached. In a day or two the construction crew will be increased and the balance of the distance to Marysville will be covered in a short space of time, 2 The manager of the company thinks that by the last of this month: he will have the local exchanges in at Grass Valley and this city, and everything in order for actual business.
