TELEPHONE No. 4. THE rates OCT. 8, 1897. HELD 10 ANSWER Will Have to Appear In Response to a Charge .of Burglary. Yesterday’s Marysville Appeal says: Leon Crossman, a tin-horn gambler and miner, was held to answer before the Superior Court yesterday by Justice W. M. Jefferds on a charge of burglary. Sheriff Donahoe took Crossman to Browns Valley yesterday morning. He was accompanied by District Attorney McDaniel, who prosecuted, and by Court Reporter W. M. Cutter, who took down the testimony. The defendant had worked at the ‘Webb mine. for a short time and had become acquainted with the premises before he was discharged’ about three weeks ago. Being in need of some money recently he went into the room where the men change their clothes when going to work in the mine, and after making a search of several pair of pants, was rewarded by finding about $2. John McdAusland, the foreman, swore to.acomplaint and ‘had him arrested on a charge of petit larcency, but the testimony taken before Justice Jefferds showed that he was guilty of burglary. He will no doubt plead guilty and by saving the county expense shorten his term in the State Prison. He is now confined in one of the cages in the county jail and will have plenty of time to consider the course he . will pursue. FRIDAY..... -A SPLENDID SELECTION. A Former Nevada Cityan Elected to a Responsible Position. By unanimous vote of the directors of the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad, at their meeting Tuesday afternoon, William B. Storey. Jr. was elected general superintendent. of he company. The new position means not only promotion and increase of salary but recognition of most valuable services to the Valley road almost since its inception, for Mr. Story, as chief engineer, organized the operating -department of the road, and latterly had charge of it as acting general superintendent in addition to his numerous duties as engineer. Mr. Storey was born in San Francisco. He is a graduate of the Oakland High School and of the University of California, class of 81. He is a member_of the University Club, ofthe American Society of Civil Engineers and of the Technical Society of the Pacific Coast. He was practically educated to railroad business from early youth, and nearly. all his life he has been in contact with railroad work. As a boy he was ina railroad office. In 1877-78, just before he entered. the university at Berkeley, he was with the Central Pacific Railroad as chainman and rodman. After graduation from college he was again with the Central Pacific Railroad in various subordinate positions from 1881 to 1883. From 1883 to 1885 he was with the same company as assistant engineer on construction. In 1885-86 he was 4 member of the-firm of Palmer & Storey, civil engineers. From 1886 to 1893 he was. in charge of surveys and construction for His bond was fixed at $1,000. the Southern Pacific Company. Then, ARTER NIGHTFALL. A Time When Children Should be at Their Homes. A Positive Cure for Dyspepsia. This may read as though we were putting it a little strong becausg it is generally thought by the majority of peoplethat Dyspepsia in its chronic form is incurable, or practically so. But we have long since shown that Dyspepsia is curable, nor is it such a difficult matter as at first appears. ‘ The trouble with Dyspeptics is that they are continually dieting, starving themselves, or going to opposite extremes or else deluging the already over burdened stomach with “ bitters,” “after dinner pills,” etc., which invariably increase the difficulty even if in some cases they do give a slight temporary relief. Such treatment of the stomach simply make matters> worse. What the stomach wants isa rest. Now how can the stomach become rested, recuperated and at the same time the body nourished and sustained. This is the great secret and this is also the secret of the uniform success of Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets. This is a comparatively new remedy, but its success and popularity leaves no doubt as to its merits. The Tablets will digest the food anyway, regardless of condition of stomach. The sufferer from Dyspepsia according to directions is to eat an abundance of good, wholesome food and use the tablets before and after each meal and the result will be that the food will be digested no matter how bad your dyspepsia may be, because as before stated, the tablets will digest the food even if the stomach is wholly inactive. To illustrate our meaning plainly, if you take 1,800 grains of meat, eggs or ordinary food and place it in a temperature of 98 degrees, and put with it one of Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets it will digest the meat or eggs almost as perfectly as if the meat was enclosed within the stomach. The stomach may be ever so weak yet these tablets will perform the work of digestion and the body and _ brain will be properly nourished and at the same time a radical, lasting cure of dyspepsia will be made because the much abused stomach will be given, to some extent, a much needed rest. Your druggist will tell you that of the many remedies‘advertised to cure dyspepsia none of them has given so complete and general satisfaction as Stuart’s Dyspepsia Tablets and not least in importance in these hard times is the fact that they are also the cheapest and give the most good for the least money. The lessees of the Eaglebird mine at
Maybert are getting along well with the work of putting the property in shape to take out ore. It been idle for a yeat past and there is pgood deal of repairing to be done. The trestle of the mile flume has become insecure in many places, and the decayed ‘timbers are being replaced with sound ones. At the mine the machinery is to be overhauled, a new ladder put in the shaft, an underground cave to be cleared away and‘some of the ground to be retimbered. The winze that was pany to join the 500 and 600 levels, and on which a miscalculation was made, is to be connected. All this work will take some two months’ time, and the stoping of ore can be begun allessees know the mine thoroughly, having worked there before, and the chances of their making a good thing are most favorable. @o North San Juan Notes.
