THE SIGLE TAX AND-THE MINER,Mr. Gage, the Republican candidate for Governor, in “his speech in San Francisco on Saturday night, read from a. speech made in Congress by Mr. Maguire in 1894, wherein he urged the single tax doctrine, anid denied the right of the miner to take ore from: his “own mite of separate gold from the gravel. In the speech referred to Mr; Maguire was quoted by Mr. Gage as saying: we te “The margin of production, which is now the share of tthe non-producer, would go to . general benefit of all. . This would be just ‘because the margin of production results in all cases from the ‘presence and enterprise and efforts of the whole community, except in so far as it represents the value of the great natural deposits; such as coal, iron, gold, silver, silver and the like under the earth, and forests over: the. earth. “And these deposits and forests were prepared and stored by the Creator for the general common use of all mankind. . “Tt is right”—speaking of the mines and the’ otes—“ it is right that their value should be given to the whole people whenever private individuals extract them from the earth.” Minor Notes and Comments .of Local Interest. The returns from the Alaska-Treadwell mine for the fiscal year ended May 3ist last are interesting, showing how cheaply large bodies of low grade ore of the kind can be handled. During the period quoted the company mined 254,329 tons of ore, of Which 227,692 tons came from the 110-foot level and 26,637 tons from the recently opened 220-foot ‘level. In an able article in the San Francisco Report Professor E. J. Hittel) gives the following information relating to the product of famous mines: The Potosi in Bolivia, South America, which has been worked some 390 years, has yielded about $1,700,000,000. The next largest is that of Guanajuato in Mexico, which ‘in about the same length of time has yielded $1,200,000, 000. Next is that of Zactatecas in Mexico, whose yield has been about $850,000,000. Next to that is San Louis Potosi in Mexico, which has yielded $750,000,000, and following that the mine of Chihuahua with-a. yield of $500,000,000. The last of these giant mines—that is, the last to be ‘discovered and developed, is the’ Comstock lode of Nevada, which, though worked for only about’ thirty years as against the 300 $500,000,000. Unquestionably between Potosi and the United States, possibly beyond them north and south, probably in the same chain‘of mountains, which have been found ‘so rich in’ special spots; and beyond much question in the deeper and outlying levels of the mines that have already yielded so heavily there are multitudinous other deposits that it will be the business of future enterprise to explore, develop and turn into the lap of commerce. #A Very Surprisea Man.
