HE RECEPTION tendered Dr. George Cooper Pardee, Republican nominee for Governor, and wife, at . $187 50. '
Marysville on Monday afternoon and evening, proved
to be one of the grandest political demonstrations
that has ever occurred in the history of that city, Dr. and
Mrs. Pardee, accompanied by Hon. Duncan McKinley, Assistant U. S. Attorney, and Senator W. M. Cutter, were met
cat the Marysville depot in the afternoon by the reception
committee, many citizens, carriages and a brass band, and
conducted to the Western Hotel, where the party dined and
rested. Afterwards an informal reception was sheld, people,. (1 otes, $2 75.
regardless of party, calling to pay their respects to the distinguished guests. In the evening, before the speaking,
there was a fine display of fireworks, and long before the appointed hour the large theater was packed with people and /. bouse. §2.
standing room was at a premium.
The meeting was addressed by Dr. Pardee, D. McKinley
and W. M. Cutter, all of whom were listened to with rapt attention and who delivered excellent addresses on the issues
of the day. Hon. A.C. McLaughlin of Sutter county, Republican nominee for Assemblyman, presided as chairman
of the meeting and after, making a few introductory remarks,
introduced Dr. Pardee, who came modestly forward and in a
conversational tone began his address. Strict attention was
given him from first to last and he was frequently interrupted
by applause.
The doctor stated that he was just a plain, ordinary Californian who had been nominated by the Republican party
for the position of Governor of his native State. He had
gone out among the people that they might see what manner
of man he was; that they might look into his eyes and hear
the tones of his voice and judge from these things and his
general appearance something of’ his character and fitness to
fill the office to which he aspired. Continuing he said he had
left the nominating convention entirely unpledged except
that he had declared his purpose to stand squarely on his
party’s platform, and, if elected, ds he surely. would be, he
would work to the best of his ability in the interests of all
the people. He would give California the best administration of which he was capable” Did not believe in making
promises, as a rule. Men who did so were not generally good
performers.
“The Democrats say that there is no politics so far as
the Gubernatorial end of the ticket is concerned; no connection between this campaign and the one that will be waged
two years hence, when Theodore Roosevelt will again be
made President. But there is a connection; there is politics
of national significance to be considered in connection with
the present campaign, and the Democratic State platform is
a living proof of the statement. One of its main planks is an
attack on the protective tariff systems upon which our farmers, our viticulturists, horticulturists, cattlemen and so on
are dependent.”
