THREE, ELECTRIC SCHEMES,
Marysville Likely t to 0 Gat More Light Than
She Needs,
Thursday evening’s Marysville Democrat says:
At the present time there are three
propositions being con sidered looking
to the establishment of electric light
and power plants, the water power for
each of «them to be taken from the
Yuba river.: A company has been incorporated com posed of Sacrament capitalists, of which number District Attorney Frank D. Byan is one. These
men have secured a water right, the
location of which is only ten miles east
of this city. A second company, composed principally of residents of this
city ‘and county, havea franchise or
water right at the narrows near to
Smartsville, about eighteen miles east
of Marysville.
The third proposition on this line is
the Browns Valley. irrigation ditch
-which takes water from the Yuba
-river’about forty miles from this city.
‘The last mentioned is said to have
‘been secured by John Martin, R. R.
‘Colgate and their associates, and this
‘includes the franchise granted last
‘winter by the Supervisors and City
«Council.
Of the three propositions the two
‘first are by far the most feasible and
advantageous, as viewed by practical
men of experience. The third proposi'ion is the most difficult and expensive to construct and operate, owing to
repairs to maintain the ditch and a
large reservoir. But it can be stated
as a fact that within one year one of
the two first named companies will
have established a good plant, at the
same time the Brown Valley scheme
muy also materialize. ‘Persons who
enter into contracts at this time to
sevure ‘cheaper lighting should’ first
consider the fact that if one company
can reduce the price one-third, a second one may reduée it one-half: Competition may result in giving the people of this city lights: at one-half the
amount offered by the men who are
endeavoring to secure one-sided contracts.

The Union Hotel: Building Flooded and
os Badly Damaged.
Shortly before seven o’clock this
morning some scoundrel went into the
fourth-story attic of. the Union hotel
and attaching the fire-hose that ‘is kept
there to a hydrant turned on a goodsized stream. Thé water spread rapidly between the attic floor and the
ceiling of the third story, and from
there soaked down in numerous places
to the: ground floor. The~ “plastering
was badly damaged in a number of
rooms, soiling the carpets and furniture. The damage will probably
amount to several hundféd dollars. __
Today Manager Netshe swore out a
warrant charging Harry Walker, exsteward at the hotel, with the crime.
Walker came up from Sacramento yesterday on a bicycle and last evening
had some words with Mr. Netshe concerning money that he claimed was
owing to him by the former proprietor.
It is alleged that Walker said he would
get even with the hotel, and it is asserted there are other suspicious circumstances pointing to him as the
party who turned on the water. He
left for Sacrameato on his wheel this
nrorning shortly after the’ Glocovery of
the flood.
The offivers along the line between
here and Sacramento have been telegraphed to arrest and hold him,
~-ARRESTED NEAR AUBURN.
Shortly after noon Sheriff Getchell
was notified that Walker had just been
arrested on the Colfax road near Auburn, and was lodged in the Placer
county jail. The’ prisoner professed
surprise at his arrest and asked the
cause of it. When told he disclaimed
committing the act. Sheriff Getchell
will go after him tomorrow.
