WHERE DOES JONES STAND?
The expectant public is waiting anxiously for Chairman Jones’ views and
attitude in regard to the recognition of
silver by State platforms. One day he
announces that he favors it; the next
day he announces he is against it, and
the next day he tries to announce that
he has said nothing on the subject.
Mr. Jones is evidently ashamed of the
_.eompany that he is keeping, but apparently sees no way of getting awey
from it. Why doesn’t he admit frankly
that the silver proposition is a failure,
and go back to the good old Jacksonian
and Jeffersonian principles of democracy, sound money and protection?
Tue electric dredge on the Kowarau
river, New Zealand, made a return of
9658 ounces in gold recently. The own. ers of this dredge are reported to have
obtained gold to the value of £17,000 as
the result of their first year’s operations, with the work of seven men and
an initial expenditure of £4,500. The
company has lately finished the construction of another dredge.
Tue Tucson Citizen says that the recent Arizona legislative enactment
compelling the University assay office
to make gold and silver assays for 50
cents each, virtually closed np the assay offices in that city. From 400 to
600 assays per month are made at the
University, while the assay offices in
town do not makea dozen. The law is
unjust and should be repealed.

Mrs Lanerry’s popularity will by no
means be enhanced by the fact that
her heartlessness has driven her faithfal husband to the insane asylum. His
life, fortune and reason have all been
sacrificed at her shrine.

Tue Kern Oounty Californian says
that a Kentucky county court adjourned the other day out of respect for the
memory ‘of a negro preacher. Perhaps
though it was only as an excuse to go
and get a drink.
Dress continue to announce that
strikes don’t pay. What’s the matter—
it looks as if he can’t get that $200a
month he was to draw as salary in return for his services as professional agitator.

Electric Mining Machinery — Doings
Around Dutch Flat.
The following items are gleaned from
the Colfax Sentinel of yesterday:
The Dutch Flat young man who attended the dance at Towle Saturday
. evening, and came in contact with a
post while running to catch the train,
is somewhat disfigured, and will remain
in the country until his beauty returns,
The electrical machinery for the Hidden Treasure mine is in successful operation. The blower which forces the
air into the mine has been started. The
electric tocomotive which left Colfax,
Monday has reached Centerville and
the entire plant will soon be running.
Wells, Fargo & Co. Agent F. M.
Ackerman on Tuesday received three
carier pigeons from G. W. Kinney, of
Rancho del Paso, with instructions to
liberate them and take note of the time.
The birds were released near the express office at 3:16 p.m. They rose to
a considerable hight, and after circling
some three minutes took a direct course
for home.
A forest fire raging in a canon above
Bath came near destroying that little
village. The prompt work of a large
party of citizens of Ba‘h and Forest
Hill saved the town. The fire burned
over Batcher field and past the Crome
‘Pile, through a section covered with
heavy timber on both sides of the
county road to Baker Ranch. The fire
burned some timber on Mayflower
ground and the Strobe place had a close
call. Wm. Rea witha force had hard
work to save the Washington Shaft
, from destruction; also a large quantity
of cord wood.

Indian Medicine Bags.
The medicine bags of Navajoes, Zania
and Apaches, all kindred tribes in New
Mexico and Arizona, contain a curious
powder, known .as_corn-pollen or hodjentin. This powder, which is the pollen of a rush, and also of maize, appears
to be used as a medicine, being eaten
by the sick and put on the head or other
parte to case pain, but principally as a
sacred offering to the sun and moon
pinch of it is thrown toward
end then toward the four winds for
help in war ~ the chase, is pot on
trail of. a snake to prevent harm
it, placedon the tongue of the
hunter as a restorative, hung in
round the neéks of infants as a preservative and sprinkled on the dead. In
fact, every action of these Indians is
sanctified by this powder, so that, as
volume of ‘‘The Report
of Ethnology’’ (Smithsonian), ‘‘plenty
of hdddentin has come to mean that a
particular performance or place is sa-cred. ’”
Captain Bourke shows many analogies
to the use of this sacred powder both
in the east and amiong the ancient
Greeks and Romans, and it is clear that
similar practices with regard to ‘“‘medicine’’—that is, magio—have prevailed
everywhere and in all ages, for superstition seems to be the universal heritage of man, so deeply ingrained in his
very nature that all the efforts of philosophers and ‘‘thirteen”’ clubs will not
avail to root it out. Medicine bags or
amuleta will continue to be worn openly or secretly not only by the wild Indian and the Kaffir, but by many among
ourselves who cling to the beliefs handed down probably from remote prehistoric ages.—Chambers’ Journal.
A Franchise For Sale.
“The biggest thing I ever had on
tap,’? said a citizen of Alabama,
‘‘was when I first realized that it was
necesgary for me to go, out and do something for myself. Before I came face:'to
face with this emergency I had been
abroad and was impressed with the
way they must make money at Monte
Carlo. It was mathematically a sure
thing and plenty of it.
‘‘After I had interested two friends
we all went to Mexico, and by lavish
promises succeeded in getting a franshise from the government and were to
condact a mammoth gambling institution under its protection. Not the least
promising feature sas a lottery, and
there were to be all the other allurements that attract the devotees of
chance,
**It was no trouble to interest all the
capital we wanted. Men of the east advanced the money, with the one proviso
that they should not appear in the
transaction. We imported some of the
wisest gamblers of the west, and of
course they went through their paces
just to show what they conld do when
the vast enterprises became active. One
night we three proprietors took a hand
to familiarize ourselves with the sports.
By sunrise the gamblers had every dollar that was to go into our Monte Carlo, and we put in five years working in
a silver mine to reimburse our backers.
We have the franchise yet.’’——Detroit.

They Liked Victoria.
As an indication of the popularity attained very early in her life by Princess
Victoria it is interesting to hear that
great indignation was expressed all over
England when it was known that the
child had not been present at her uncle’s coronation in 1831. Some said that
the Duchess of Kent was in fault, others blamed the prime minister, and
some asserted that Queen Adelaide was
responsible for the omission. Letters
and articles were published in all the
newspapers, and the sensation did not
subside until the Duchess of Kent explained that, owing to a weakness of
the ankles from which the little Victoria was then suffering, it had been
thought wiser not to expose her-to the
long standing which attendance at the
ceremony would have necessitated. —
