Nothing deadens the heart of enterprise or unstrings the nerves of action like a fit of the blues. In one of those beautiful prayers which Robert. Louis’ Stevenson wrote for us In his Samoan household he prayed for “courage and gayety anda quiet mind.” A man who backs up his brains with these three gifts has all the odds in his favor. “You wouldnt ait would bother to exchange & like a lamp wick,” said a te general supply. store, “but the fact is that we are asked to take back yards of the stuff. “Indeed, of all the commodities we handle none gives us more trouble than lamp wicks: There are at present about a thousand different kinds of lamps and oil stoves on the market, each with different sized burners, which naturally require as many differjess variety; still we cannot supply the wants of our customers. This is much their own-fault, however, for instead of examining the old wick and finding: out just what they need before} they leave home they merely guess at its measurements, and when I ask what size they want they say: “Oh, about so big? . “They. leave me te go the rest of the way blindly. As a consequence I often make mistakes, and the next day they brifig the wick back and want to exchange it for something that will fit the burner. If they have taken the précaution to learn what they want, we aecommodate them,” even though the returned wick does smell to heaven with oil. Through pursuing this polley we now have hundreds of yards of wick on our hands that we can never dispose of, but this question of lamp wicks is so cOmplex that there seems no remedy for the difficulty2’—New York Times. How to Learn to Sing. Lung power and capacity may be wonderfully increased and strengthened by a constant repetition of the syllable “ah” on the three or four notes in the middle register of the voite— that is, the three or four notes which one sings most naturally and with the lenst-effort._ Let the pupil get one note cleur cut, round, full and musical; then from that note a8 a starting point let bim go up and down, gradually workIng out the huskiness from the adja‘cent notes an@ sounding them until they become pure and resonant and can be delivered without strain or effort. Let him work systematically and, above alli avoid the pernicious trick of learning “pieces” by rote or by ear. His first effort should be to increase the purity and range of his voice, and to that end he shonld, as suggested . above, use the broad syllable “ah” only for a time, and on, no account should he try to sing an air until he cin do so understandingly, with a fall knowledge of musical notation-and a perfect command of his vocal se sources. Mrs. Subarb—Oh, my dear, that mag nificent watchdog you brought heme yesterday is gone. Mr. Suburb—Eh? Did he break the chain? “No; but an ugly looking tramp came around and acted so terribly that I let the dog loose, but instead of tearing the tramp to pieces he went off with bim.” “Great Scot! A middle aged woman called at a chemist’s in Camden town one evening and asked for morphine, and the shopmen ‘replied to her request with: “Is it for your husband?” “Oh, no, sit;,1 have not got any.” “You don’t think of suicide?’ “Far fronz it.” “What do you take it for?” “Must I tell you, sir?’ “You must, or otherwise I can’t sup: ply you.” “Well, then,’ don’t you-think that @ woman forty years old who.has had, her first offer of marriage less*than an hour ago naturally wants something to. hight’s sleep?” ‘The druggist. thought—so,_and :she went away contented with the nerve soother. —Spare Monenté.
