RESIDENT ROOSEVELT has-received a frank and whole-hearted endorsement at the hands of the California Republicans. Not only was he given this in a special plank, but his policy in the Philippines and his attitude toward the trusts are specifically commended. In general the platform is to be commended for its straight_ forward utterances on both National and State issues. Besides endorsing the President, the Philippitie policy of the Administration, the Isthmian Canal, the reclamation of arid lands, Chinese exclusion, protection of water and forests in the interests of the public, the merit system in the public service and legislation to protect the oil industry of the State, the platform unequivocally denounces Cuban reciprocity, and all reciprocal, legislation and treaties inconsistent with the Republican policy of protection. In this regard the California Republicans plant themselves squarely and firmly on the national platform of 1900. It is worthy of note that this plank was also taken bodily from the Alameda county platform. This indicates how thoroughly the Republicans of this county are in touch with party sentiment throughout the State. ' The plank relating to the support of the State University deserves especial mention, for it expresses a policy that will meet with the approbation of every lover of the. noble institution at Berkeley. It reads: ‘We favor just and liberal appropriations for the proper maintenance of the University of California, and we recommend that the growing needs and functions of the University be supplied from permanent sources.” On the whole, the platform is worthy of the Republican party of the great State of California, worthy of the nation, and is expressive of a thoughtful and patriotic spirit. ‘12 t-2c Pet Wee #444444 864 4648 The Murder — N the city of Oakland, recently, a girl of thirteen, the daughter of respectable parents, was found insensible from drink in the tent of a man who ran an itinerant merry-go-round. The mau had been giving the child free rides during the afternoon, and finally induced her to partake of whisky in company with himself and some drunken companions. As the male persons concerned in this outrage on decency are in the hands of the authorities, it is hardly proper, despite the natural feeling of indignation, to anticipate the action of the courts further than to say that: the ease is one in whic swift and stern justice should be meted out. The deplorable affair deserved special attention, not alone for the exhibition of bestiality exhibited by creatures calling themselves men, but for the evils which follow parental negligence and indulgence. It appears that this girl was allowed to spend the afternoon as she pleased, going where she liked and associating with whom she chose. No doubt her mother was busy, and saw no harm in allowing the child to find recreation as she saw fit. But harm came of it. Had the mother taken pains to ascertain her daughter’s whereabouts and with whom she was associating, the child would have been preserved from the contamination that has fallen on her. A crime would have been averted and wretchedness kept away from a respectable family. . This does not in any way palliate the conduct of the men who induced this unsophistocated child to get intoxicated, but this instance, as well as others of a similar nature which have occurred in our own city, plainly discloses the disastrous consequences of permitting young girls to run at random in the streets, going where fancy directs. is too much license of this description in Nevada City, as well as in other towns of California, and something should be done to check it. Parents should exercise more whole— some restraint on their children. It is not unfrequent to see groups of boys and girls between twelve and twenty years of age roaming the streets at late hours of the night, and their conduct tco often gives evidence of indulgence in intoxicating liquors. In large cities these young people who wander about at late hours of the night finally drift into restaurants of a certain class where liquors are served in private rooms, and this tells its own story. rae Opportunity and temptation are the handmaids of vice. Corrupting companionship and corrupting surroundings will inevitably corrupt the minds of the young. Few, even among the old, can resist such demoralizing influences, If parents would exercise a more. careful supervision over the movements of their chlidren many a social tragedy would be averted, But if parents fail in their duty the authorities should not. The business of selling or giving liquors to minors should be broken up wherever it may be practiced. Men who corrupt youth, whether for gratification or gain, \Dr. Geo. C. Aboat 9 o’clock this morning as the Downieville stage was coming down to this city with five passengers and John Downey the driver, when it reached a point one and one-half miles this side of the Mountain House, the lines got under the tail of one of the leaders, and the horse became frightened. He scared the other horses and the team ran away. Downey was anable to control the horses, and in going around a short bend inthe road the stage turned over and the passengers and driver were thrown out into the road. Downey hang onto the lines like a hero, and was dragged over the rocks for quite a distance, but finally brought the horses to a_ standstill. Assistance was sent from the Mountain House and the stege was turned up onto its wheels again. Downey then picked-up bis passengers and started back for Camptonville to secure medical assistance, but was met by a doctor coming ont. All the passongers were injored. W. A. Saunders, a mining man, had his foot torn from the socket and badly mangled. It may have to be amputated, Mr, Nolan, a livery stable man of Downieville, was scratched up, and his wife seriously hurt, being cut about the face, bruised up and her back hart, Walter Lawrey, owner of a'large gravel mine at Forest City, was badly hurt. He was bruised up and it is thought he is injured internally, ag he was spitting up blood, Chas, W. Garside, who went to Alleghany in company with Saunders to purchase a gravel mine, is also badly hurt, L.L Gaffney, manager of the Downieville Stage Company, left this city at one o’clock this afternoon for Camptonville with Dr. 0. L. Muller, who will attend to the injured. They will all be brought to this city if possible for medical treatment. The company is doing everything possible to alleviate the sufferings of the unfortunate passengers, Too much praise cannot be given John Downey for the courage he displayed in hanging onto the horses. He was badly bruised and cut up, by coming in contact with the rocks, The Republican . Nominee or Clovernor. Receiving Many High Dr. Geo. C. Pardee of Oakland, the Republican nominee for Governor, is being unanimously indorsed by the ‘press and supporters of the party throughout the State, and his popu-. larity is growing daily and increasing in magnitude. . At the: home of Felix Fornier, half way between Sierra City and Downfeville, a most unfortunate mistake was made last night by Mra. Fornier, the result of which was the death of one of her little daughters a few hours later. For over a week the two little daughtefs of Mr. and Mrs. Fornier have been confined to their bed with scarlet fever, but the last few days both have showed considerable signs of improvement and the worried parents began to feel relieved. About nine o’clock last night one of the little girls awakened and the mother gave her what she supposed was the medicine left by the doctor. The child immediately began to scream and show signs of distress. It was at this time that the mother discovered that she had made an awfal mistake and had got hold of the wrong bottle and given the child a large dose of carbolio acid. Everything possible was done to relieve the child’s sufferings—and-a-messenger was sent to Downievilie fora physician, but all efforts were to no avail and after about four hours of agony the whild found peace in death. ‘The parents are nearly insane over the misfortun ate mistake and to make matters worse are deprived of the assis. their hour of grief, on avcount of the most sincere sympathy of everyone 13 extended to them. if “For the Library, _ Mrs. L. Robbed by Thugs. Yesterday morning about 1 o’clock, when Owen Williams, proprietor of a Sierra City stable left the gambliog table for his rooms, which are located in the stable building,he was known to have had a considerable amount of money in his pockets. About 5:30 miners were going to work, they discovered William’s unconscious form lying on the street in front of the stable. An examination revealed the fact that Williams’ skull had been fractured by a heavy blow from some blunt fron instrament. His pockets bad been rifled and all the money he had the night previous had been taken, , At a late hour this afternoon Williams was still unconscious, and it is not thought that the injured man will live. Williams is one of the most popular business men of Sierra City and the terrible tragedy that has befallen him has created considerable feeling in the mountain town, Off on. Vacation. Dr. H. O.
