F. K Shattuck, ex-Mayor of Oakjland and Berkeley’s oldest and best
. known citizen, died at 330 yesterday
(morning at his home on Shattuck
; avenue, a8 a result of injuries received
‘mine days ago while sbout to board a
street car. :
i Mr. Shattuck was born at Crown
; Point, Essex county, New York, March
After reaching Sactamento Mr. Shattack and his companions embarked in
& Whitehall boat for Marysville and
from there they proceeded on foot to
Rose’s Bar, After & month of indifferent success at mining at that point
they proceeded to Nye’s Crossing on
the Middle Yuba, where they -undertook to turn the rivér from its channel for the purpose of mining the bed.
They were.successfulin diverting the
stream, but very little gold was secured
from its bed.
Atter this ansuccessful venture, the
original party broke up and Messrs.
Shattack and Biake came to Nevada
City, where they formed a partnership
with Messrs. Kleinfelter and William
Hillegass in mining operations. Mr.
Shattack engaged in hauling gravel
from the hills down to Deer creek for
washing while the other partners sank
« shaft in thatvicinity. They remained
here until December, when the rains
caused them todesist operations. They
then went to Goodyear’s Bar onthe
North Yuba and spent the time there
and at Downieville until January, 1852.
‘This ended Mr. Shattuck’s mining experiences for a time, and latterly he
went to Oakland where he engaged in
other parsuits.

Yesterday afternoon’s game of ball
between the Monarchs and Pioneers
was won by the former in a ten-itming
game by a score of six to five. It was
a great contest. At the end of the
ninth imning they stood four.to four.
Then Caverly.made an overthow to the
home base and let in two runs for the
Monarchs. The Pioneers made but
ene run in the tenth inning. There
were few errors on either side outside
of disastrous overthrows by the Pioneers, the stronger of the two organizations at bat. “Overmeyer for the Pioneers struck out nine men and Whalen
for the Monarchs struck out six. The
two clubs seem to be very evenly
