Yesterday somebody left the gate toa clover patch open at the Kohler ranch near the Central House -and a band of goats got in and gorged ‘themselves with the clover to such an ‘extent that when Sheriff Getchell arrived at the ranch yesterday afternoon they were swelled up like bags of wind. They were as big around as they were long, the whole band being inflated and all of them standing around apparently ready to explode from the pressure of gas within. Epitor Txanscript:— On» Saturdar, August 7th, at 7 o’clock p. m, Captain Anderson orderded the “gang plank” in and shut off the shout which arose as we swung out from Folsom street wharf. It seemed that every steamer in the Bay was wishing us God-speed and shouting with their whistles a good bye, which our own vessel answered in good style. As we passed the English ship, “Samaritan,” the olc Union Javk was lowered three times in salute, and our “Old Glory” responded while the crowds on the decks cheered Many on deck looked through mists to see loved ones who were waving ‘farewells.”..Your correspondent. went to his stateroom. We were leaving the best land on earth for Arctic wilds. The question, “What will be our homecoming?” forced itself to our minds. Saturday night on the Pacific was perfect. The moon hung like a gem on the brow of the sky, and in its sheen across the waters vessels looked like phantom ships as they passed by. Monday the sea was a little rough, and of.the seventy-three passengers about fifty had a rush of food to the face. Yours truly was not one of them. Thursday night a sou’ west squall struck us and wave after wave went over our decks, It looked rather solemn to a landsman. Weslept with our clothing on that night. Our ship is only 14§ feet long with 82 feet breadth of beam, so one has a right to be uneasy by spells. Today has. been very rough. Water is in every stateroom. and over all decks. I find on board William Garratt and his wife of Dutch Flat (she is the only lady aboard), and also J. Li. Holland who was once a resident of Nevada City, now bound for Dawson We have one “dude” on board. Poor thing. It takes about four of the boys to wait on it. Should it live to reach St. Michaels we shall beg the master of this ship to take it back to San Francisco. We have 'two physicians, both fine fellows, one dentist who is a good fellow, and one lawyer from Kentucky. He is bright and sharp. All are bent on having a good, time while afloat. Hard times will come soon enough. We hope to reach St. Michaels by Friday next, and leave there for Dawson City by the Monday following. We have a tug-boat aud a new barge on board. These are to take passengers and supplies 1900 miles up the Yukon to Dawson. We had to pay 714 cents per pound for all excess of freight above 2000 pounds. I paid $15 45-excess, my trunk and two grips going ‘Avaust 197s. This afternoon a great meeting was called ondeck. Mr. Wilkison of Wood land called for order, and stated the object to be for the purpose of showing our appreciation of the many kindnesses shown us by Captain Anderson and his officers. Your correspondent was elected chairman and appointed a committee of three to draft resolutions. We hada big time. Never did the waves of Behring Sea bear more joyous shouts or mirthful laughter across their bosom. This is a beautiful sea. The pass into it is eleven miles wide. On the east is.the island of Uninuk upon which are a number of mountain peaks, several of which are from 4000 to 8000 feet high. One of the loftiest throws from its ragged peak clouds of smoke. Its sides are deeply scarred, and under the glass tell its volcanic nature. The island on the west is Wgomak and is barren. Two rocky peaks stand as grim sentinels to keep the pass. Seals and whales are numerous in these waters. Avuaust 21st. We reached St. Michaels at 3 o’clock p.m. Thetownis on a beautiful isIt has about 1000 population now. Islands about the-bay are covered with a zarpet of green. We leave for Dawson on Tuesday next. J.T. H. I myself don’t believe in thuse silly, bookish notions, and as the silly heroines always say yes, why, I'll tell you bluntly, no, sir, I won’t.’’—Philadelphia North American. é It was the belief of Livingstone that nearly all lions were ‘‘left handed. ” He watched them closely, and when they desired to strike a fierce blow they al. ways used the left paw. makes the food pure, a wholesome and delicious. *) » Weary land’’ and realized that a little PARTS OF THE COUNTRY WITH ON® PECULIARITY OR ANOTHER. The Yellowstone Has the Greatest Range of Temperature—Death Valley the Hottest Place—Where It-Rains Every Day, Over the Hill From Winter to Summer, I have ron about the United States a good deal for the last 80 years and have made memory notes of such climatic peculiarities as have come under my observation. i ‘The place having the widest range of temperature of any with which I am familiar is Fort Keogh, in the Yellowstone valley. Not infrequently in the winter the mercury tumbles down to 50 degrees below zero, and it has been known in summer to climb up to 120 degrees above. Here isan extreme range of 170 degrees, and yet people ‘manage to live very comfortably there the yeal
round. In the early summer the gras on the plains and hills turns brown and. yellow, and all green vanishes from the wide landscape except where a fringe of cottonwood trees skirts a water course. It is a peculiarity of the extreme high temperature in the arid regions that you do not perspire at all—that is, you dc not sensibly perspire. The moisture is all evaporated from your skin as fast as it is formed by the extreme dryness of pressive, however, as it is at a tempera ture of 80 or 90 degrees along the Atluntic seaboard. If you are indoors o1 ander the shade of a tree, you are quite comfortable. Anything that will break the fierce rays of the sun is sufficient to relieve you from all oppression from the high temperature. Traveling some years age across the hot, billowy plain of the great basin of the Columbia with a camping party looking up a route for a railroad, we came toa huge columnar rock of black basalt. The day was intensely hot. We stopped ‘the teants, and, throwing ourselves down on the shady side of the rock, we recalled the phrase in the Bible about ‘‘the shadow of a great rock in a shade meant as much to the people.of arid Palestine as to us tired travelers in arid America. L The hottest place in the.United States is unquestionably Death valley, in southern California. It is about 200 fect below the sea level and is rimmed around. with black, bare mountains. heated season often drop dead. Borax is found here, but the mining processes cease in the heat of midsummer. I réad somewhere of a party of men who entered the valley in July, knowing nothseryed their lives by lying all day in the water of a little stream that came out of the mountains and was soon dried up in the fierce rays of the sun. They were #lad to escape under the cooling shades of night, is Neah bay, on the strait of Fuca, in the ‘state of Washington. There is an ‘Indian reservation on the bay. The natives have a very pretty’ knack of making ornamental basins and carving wooden bowls, which they decorate with high colors. The most remarkable climatic barrier in the United States is that of the Cascade mountains, in Washington. In winter time the railway train toils up the eastern slope of these mountains between walls of snow higher than the roofs of the cars in a long winding lane scooped out by the rotary plow. Once through the tunnel on the Northern Pacific, or over the switchback on the Great Northern, you suddenly leave winter behind you, and, whirling down the western slope of the mountains, in less than an. hour you meet the full spring. The grass is green, waterfowl swim on the rivers and bays, the grows are holding their annual conventions in the tree tops with much oratorical clamor, and when: you arrive at Tacoma you find the flowers blooming in the dooryards. The change seems magical and is as great as if you should start from Chicago in January and travel to the gulf of Mexico, yet the whole distance you have traversed to bring about this wonderful transformation is less than 100 miles. , The most peculiar climatic region with which I am familiar is the Puget sound basin, in the state of Washington. It is separated from the ocean on the west by the rugged snow. clad range of the Olympic mountains, and its eastern boundary is the still loftier range of the Cascades. The sound is connected with the Pacific by the broad strait of Juan de Fuca, and up this strait pours a great volume of moist air, brought by the Japan current from far out to sea.
