One of our exchanges gives the following definitions of mining terms: A prospector—A man’ who has a hole in the ground and is the biggest liar in town. A proposition man—One who wears laced boots aud corduroy clothes and never pays his board bill, : A mining expert—A man who can talk about formations, ramifications, stratifications, dykes, zones, dips, spurs, angies, teligtites, oozites, seddemites and all the other ites, and tites: can see a mile into mother earth und invariably condemns the country. An expert miner—A fellow who loafs around town lookivg for a job as super: . : intendent of a property, but would be a foreman if he can’t be superintendent; one who worked on the Comstock in ‘70 and has been idle ever since. A “49er,”--A man who came to the coast in the “fall of ‘49 or ’50,” and knows " where there are diggings that will pay . bere visiting her father, Constable Dil$1.50 to the pan, and is going back there just as soon as spring comes. A mining reporter—A man who wants you to subscribe for bis paper, wauts to write up your property and wants you to take him out in the best bnggy in town, smokes your best cigars and borrows $5.A mine promoter—A man who bas utilimited capital bebind him, but not any in front of him; his watch is, in soak. A tenderfoot—A “Willie boy” just out from the East. Carries a small arsenal with him, goes prospecting with a shotgun and a fishing rod, buys a salted claim and gets money from mother to come home in the fall. An amalgamator—A man who wears. long fingernails, draws $5 a shift and deposits $10 in the bank every day, if the ore is low grade, and more iu proportion. “A oval will mea of note"—Oue whe has been Oi the eve of starting for South Africa or some other far off region for seven years, to take charge of the construction of a 1000-stamp mil: for a London syndicate; a man who has has been positively known to have constructed a sawmill. An assayer—A man who charges you $1.50 for throwing your sample out the back door and writing a certificate. A mining engineer—One who makes funny figures on a blazed stump and charges a big’ price. Brinkman, wife and daughter, Mrs. Evans of Nevada City, are spending a few days at Dutch Fiat enjoying the company of old-time acquaintances. Dennis, for many years past superintendent of the Mountaineer mine, and his family will move on October first from this city and expect to settle at Los Angeles. Mr. Dennis is in poor health and'a change of climate is regarded as essential to bring about his recovery. The family have many warm friends among our citizens who will be very sorry to see them leave. The new superintendent of the Mountaineer has not yet been named. —+ e@eThe Seaweeds Won Both Games. ville Friday to engage in the Admission Day baseball] tournament, left for home at twelve o'clock last night and arrived here this afternoon crowned with wreaths of victory: Several up-countey clubs had entered, but ‘all excepting the Downievilles got cold feet when they heard the Seaweeds were in the ‘fight. The Nevada City boys beat the Downievilles on Saturday by a score of 283 to 7.and again on Sunday (in a seveninning game) by: # score of 6 to 1. Hooper Brothers were the battery for the first game and Spargo and O’Cor nor for the second. Both games were played principally for the Seaweeds by their batteries. The victors won the $100 purse. They say the celebration wasa grand success and. the Downieville people treated them like kings. Tn a six-inning game at. French Corral yesterday the club of that town defeated the Owls of this city by a sgore of 9to 7. Ihe Owls had but seven of their men along. : ——_——+0-2 Will Build a Mill. Prof. Jobn Tilton of San Franvisco is here arranging to build a two-stamp mill at the Cleveland quartz mine on the South Yuba River near the Kdwards Crossing. He has organized a vompany at San Francisco to develop ‘he property and expects to have the mill ranning next month.
